The University of Transport believes that the Hanoi National University of Education's competency assessment exam is valuable for the technical group, but hopes that the exam will expand its subject combinations.
At the conference on organizing the capacity assessment exam on the morning of December 28 of Hanoi National University of Education, Dr. Pham Thanh Ha, Head of Training Department, University of Transport, said that in addition to the main admission method of using high school graduation exam scores, this school also uses the thinking assessment (TSA) exam scores of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
According to Mr. Ha, the University of Transport aims to recruit 20% of candidates from the thinking test scores, equivalent to 600-700 students. However, in the first year, only 50 candidates were admitted, last year there were nearly 200 students.
"We expect a thinking test, but the enrollment needs of the past two years have not been met," said Mr. Ha.
To reduce dependence on high school graduation exam scores, the University of Transport is considering using the results of the competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University of Education. Mr. Ha assessed that this exam is "valuable" for technical schools in general, because it still takes separate exams for each subject, making it convenient for admission based on combinations.
However, Mr. Ha is concerned about the exam schedule in one day, candidates are limited in their choices because some subjects have the same time, so they may not be able to take all three subjects to be considered for admission to many other schools.
"If Hanoi Pedagogical University expands the scale of the exam, allowing students to freely choose three subjects, many technical schools will be able to use the results," Mr. Ha commented.
Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, also proposed that Hanoi University of Education expand the group of candidates, allowing 11th graders to try their hand, instead of only organizing the exam for 12th graders as it is now.
"We recognize the results of excellent students in grade 11, so we should let them take the exam. Whether or not to use these scores will depend on each school's admission plan," Mr. Trung suggested.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Son, Vice Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, said that the 2024 competency assessment exam will be kept stable, both in terms of organization and exam structure.
The exam took place with 8 subjects, including Math, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography. Of which, Literature has 30% multiple choice questions and 70% essay questions, English has a ratio of 80 - 20 multiple choice and essay questions, the remaining subjects are 70-30%.
The exam is expected to be held on May 11, 2024 with the following schedule:
Exam song | Exam | |
7:00-8:30 | Math (90 minutes) | |
9:00-10:30 | Literature (90 minutes) | English (60 minutes) |
13h-14h | Physics (60 minutes) | History (60 minutes) |
14:30-15:30 | Chemistry (60 minutes) | Geography (60 minutes) |
16h-17h | Biology (60 minutes) | English (60 minutes) |
According to Mr. Son, the current exam schedule is limited to one day, making it convenient for candidates in the province to travel. Candidates can take up to 5 subjects, all of which include the most popular combinations such as Math, Physics, Chemistry (A00), Math, Physics, English (A01), Math, Literature, English (D01), Math, Chemistry, Biology (B00), Literature, History, Geography (C00)...
"Schools that want to use three subjects for admission based on a combination of subjects can still be satisfied by the exam," said Mr. Son, adding that currently, Hanoi Pedagogical University has no plans to expand the scale of competency assessment exams.
The results of this exam are used for admission by seven teacher training colleges, including Ho Chi Minh City University of Education; the teacher training colleges of Hue, Thai Nguyen, and Da Nang universities; Vinh University (Nghe An), Hanoi 2 Teacher Training College (Vinh Phuc) and Quy Nhon University. Last year, nearly 4,700 candidates registered for the exam in Hanoi and Binh Dinh.
"Technical schools can base on the results and quality of the exam to register to use the results," said Mr. Son.
Regarding the expansion of the exam for 11th graders, Mr. Son said that Hanoi Pedagogical University does not want to put pressure on candidates, so those who really have direction and need should register for 12th grade.

Currently, the whole country has nearly 10 separate university entrance exams, the most popular being the aptitude test of two national universities, the thinking test of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and the exam of police schools.
More than a hundred universities use the results of these exams for admission, in addition to considering high school graduation exam scores and some other methods. Candidates taking separate exams increase every year to increase their chances of being admitted to university.
