In a social media post, the Industrial Bank pledged to help children of customers who deposited between 5 and 10 million yuan (18 and 36 billion VND) in the bank get internships at prestigious corporations in China. When the post caused heated controversy on social media, the bank deleted the post.

Currently, the Chinese online community continues to criticize the Industrial Bank's advertising, especially in the context of high unemployment rates among Chinese youth.

The bank's advertising is said to emphasize the advantages of the rich, as well as the disparity in job opportunities among young people.

In the face of fierce opposition, the Industrial Bank has apologized and announced the temporary suspension of the internship referral program for customers' children.

Several companies that the Industrial Bank mentioned in its social media posts, as examples of reputable internship units, have also denied any connection to the bank.

For Chinese students, competition for internships is becoming increasingly fierce. Statistics from the job placement platform Zhilian Zhaopin show that more than 78% of Chinese graduates in 2024 have had at least one internship, and nearly 33% have even had two or more internships.

Internship experience is considered an advantage in the job search process for new graduates. In the face of the Industrial Bank controversy, many Chinese students said they were not surprised and were even used to businesses “commercializing” internship opportunities.

“Although it’s unfair, we’re used to it,” said Cyra Liu, a student at Hunan Normal University. “Many of my friends majoring in finance have interned at banks, and they’ve seen interns get hired only because their parents deposited large sums of money in the bank. It’s not uncommon to see people who enjoy privileges because of their privileged backgrounds.”

A bank employee surnamed Cheng has seen wealthy families spend millions of yuan just to get a smooth internship for their children. “Having internship experience can help fresh graduates gain more weight with employers.

Therefore, many parents try every way to give their children the opportunity to have a smooth internship at prestigious banks," said Mr. Cheng.

Mr. Xiong Bingqi, Director of the 21st CenturyEducation Research Institute (China), commented that the way Industrial Bank advertises can raise public concerns about fairness in the job market.

“This advertising tactic goes against corporate social responsibility and raises concerns about inequality,” Xiong stressed.
