In celebration of the 2567th Buddha's Birthday, on the morning of June 1, the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Ho Chi Minh City solemnly held a ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation (1963-2023), at the Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc Monument Park (intersection of Nguyen Dinh Chieu - Cach Mang Thang Tam streets, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City).
Reading the Buddha's Birthday Message of Buddhist calendar 2567 by the Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Most Venerable Thich Le Trang, Head of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Ho Chi Minh City, reviewed the history of Buddha Shakyamuni, emphasizing that his teachings suggest solutions to build true peace and happiness for people and sustainable development for society.
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation (1963-2023), Venerable Thich Le Trang affirmed that the flame of compassion and the immortal heart of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc have shown each person how to overcome all narrow-minded selfish individualism and all extreme ideas; they are a shining symbol of the spirit of compassion, wisdom, and courage of a living Bodhisattva and the worldly spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism.
The Venerable also called on monks, nuns, and Buddhists of all walks of life to follow the vows of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc to strive to do good deeds, actively contribute to building the country, creating peace within oneself to form a lotus platform to offer to the Buddha during the Buddha's birthday season.
Reading the speech of the 2567th Buddha's Birthday Ceremony by the Most Venerable President of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Most Venerable Thich Thien Buu, Head of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha District 3, shared that this is an opportunity for all of us to practice the Buddha's teachings on sacrifice, try to help others, volunteer to share with others in all difficult circumstances, know how to accept disadvantages, sacrifice ourselves to overcome greed and selfishness to become noble and valuable people, together building a better society.
According to Venerable Thich Thien Buu, the 1005th anniversary of the passing of National Master Van Hanh, the 715th anniversary of the King - Buddha Emperor Tran Nhan Tong's Nirvana and the 60th anniversary of the day Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc sacrificed himself for the cause of national independence and unification are priceless legacies of Vietnamese Buddhism that history will deeply remember. At the same time, he hopes that monks, nuns and Buddhists of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha will strive to fulfill their mission of propagating the Dharma, bringing the Buddha's teachings deeply into human life, uniting and harmoniously implementing the programs and goals set forth by the 9th National Congress of Buddhist Delegates for the benefit of the nation and the cause of serving sentient beings to have a peaceful and happy life.
Representative of the local government, Mr. Huynh Gia Giang, Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee of District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, shared that the Buddha's Birthday is an opportunity for Buddhists to focus their hearts and minds on living according to the Buddha's teachings, promoting knowledge, morality, compassion, and generosity, and performing the deeds of "Good life, good religion," "Giving joy and saving suffering," "Serving sentient beings is making offerings to the Buddhas," in accordance with the tradition of solidarity and mutual love of the nation.
Mr. Huynh Gia Giang also acknowledged the contributions of monks, nuns, and Buddhists who actively responded to patriotic emulation movements, promoted the study and following of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style, and the campaigns "All people unite to build new rural areas, civilized urban areas," "For the homeland's seas and islands - For the frontline of the Fatherland"; the movement "All people protect the Fatherland's security"; actively mobilized and contributed to the "For the poor" fund, supported social security care, etc.

Previously, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Ho Chi Minh City also organized the cultural exhibition "Sacred fire brightens golden history" about the life and career of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc, his relics and the martyrs and predecessors who contributed to the persecution in 1963; the procession, inviting the golden statue of the Buddha's birth and the art program "Sacred fire brightens golden history"./.
