Thought constipation was due to lack of fiber, but it turned out to be colon cancer

Thinking it was simply a digestive problem due to a low-fiber diet, he hesitated to seek treatment. Until the epigastric pain became unbearable, he went to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination, a gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a 5x6cm colon tumor invading the bladder. He then went to Xuyen A General Hospital for colon cancer treatment.

Colon tumor has invaded the bladder

Doctors from the General Surgery Department conducted an interdisciplinary consultation. The doctors determined that this was a complicated case because the colon tumor had invaded the bladder, and the patient needed laparoscopic surgery to remove the tumor and prevent it from spreading to other organs. The surgery lasted 8 hours with the direct participation of 2 surgical teams.

On May 15, specialist doctor Nguyen Truong Vinh Xuan (General Surgery Department, Xuyen A General Hospital) said that during the surgery, the doctors coordinated to both remove the tumor attached to the bladder and the colon tumor. First, the doctors of the Urology Department performed surgery to remove the tumor from the bladder and suture the bladder. After that, the General Surgery team continued to cut the colon tumor and reconnect the two healthy segments of intestine.

The colon tumor was quite large and had invaded the bladder, so the surgery was quite difficult. However, thanks to the application of laparoscopic surgery techniques, the team could see the details clearly and remove all the metastatic lymph nodes in the abdomen, dissecting the blood vessels in detail, helping the surgery to be controlled safely, limiting bleeding, the incision was small, and the patient recovered quickly.

One day after surgery, the patient's health has shown positive changes. The patient no longer has bloody stools, no abdominal pain, eats normally and is being monitored and cared for in the General Surgery Department.

As expected, after the patient's health is stable, the hospital's Oncology doctors will develop an intensive chemotherapy treatment regimen.

Warning signs of colon cancer

Doctor Xuan said that colon tumors, also known as colon cancer, are the result of many factors such as genetics, eating habits, and daily activities. If colon cancer is not detected early, it can cause cancer cells to grow quickly and strongly, and spread to other organs of the body.

Early stage colon cancer can be effectively treated with minimally invasive methods such as endoscopic tumor resection and colonoscopy. The smaller the tumor, the easier the surgery and the more treatment options the patient has.

When patients discover that their body has symptoms such as prolonged epigastric pain, difficulty defecating, bloody stools, etc., they need to go for an early examination for timely and effective treatment. In addition, loss of appetite, feeling of fullness, indigestion, and poor appetite are also symptoms of colon cancer. This condition, if prolonged, makes the body tired and lose weight. Colon cancer can cause disorders in the excretion of stool. Patients often have bowel disorders, sometimes constipation, sometimes prolonged diarrhea. Patients may feel uncomfortable, have cramps, and have to strain when defecating.

"People over 40 years old should have regular gastrointestinal endoscopy to screen for the disease early, especially those with a family history of colorectal cancer," the doctor recommended.
