Sentencing 62 defendants in a gambling ring worth nearly 1,000 billion VND in An Giang

On May 24, after 13 days of first-instance trial, the People's Court of An Giang province sentenced 62 defendants in a gambling ring worth nearly 1,000 billion VND. This is the case with the largest number of defendants ever brought to trial in An Giang .

Accordingly, the defendants leading this gambling ring include: Nguyen Thi Thuy Lien (57 years old), Huynh Si Nguyen (44 years old, both living in Long Xuyen City, An Giang) each defendant was sentenced to 10 years in prison for organizing gambling and gambling.

For the same crime, defendant Duong Van Hoang (64 years old) was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison; Luong Thi Kim Kha (43 years old, both residing in Long Xuyen City, An Giang) was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison. In addition, Lien, Nguyen, and Hoang were each fined an additional 70 million VND; Kha was fined an additional 50 million VND.

Defendants in nearly 1,000 billion VND gambling ring hear court verdict

The panel sentenced the remaining 58 defendants in the case to between 6 months of suspended imprisonment and 5 years of imprisonment, and each defendant was additionally fined between 10 and 20 million VND. At the same time, the defendants were forced to return the illegal profits from their crimes.

According to the indictment, through surveillance, in June 2021, An Giang Provincial Police caught Lien, Hoang, Kha, Nguyen and many other defendants red-handed organizing large-scale gambling rings by buying lottery tickets. Afterwards, those involved in the gambling ring led by Lien surrendered.

The investigation results collected documents and evidence, determining that the total amount of money the defendants gambled with each other was more than 966 billion VND; of which more than 407.6 billion VND was exposed to lottery numbers.

This is the case with the largest number of defendants ever brought to trial in An Giang.

Specifically, from January 2018 to June 4, 2021, Lien used the phone number to register 2 Zalo accounts to join Nguyen Thi Hong Son (Lien's sister-in-law) to buy lottery tickets, receive and deliver winning and losing lottery tickets from lottery results of provinces and cities across the country.

In which, Lien, Son and the defendants Le Van Quoi (Lien's husband), Nguyen Thanh Liem (Lien's younger brother), 2 nephews... organized 18 people to participate in gambling at the same time and gambled in the form of lottery numbers, winning or losing nearly 367 billion VND, earning more than 1.2 billion VND. At the same time, organized gambling with a total amount of more than 179 billion VND, earning more than 8.5 billion VND.

Defendant Duong Van Hoang organized for more than 12 people to participate in gambling at the same time and gambled in the form of lottery numbers, winning or losing more than 4 billion VND, earning more than 61 million VND; Hoang gambled more than 1 billion VND, earning 680 million VND. Defendant Huynh Si Nguyen organized gambling and gambled, earning nearly 2 billion VND.
