"These days, every mealtime, my sister-in-law talks about the advantages of studying at a public high school. She talks so much that the whole family knows it by heart that if you pass the 10th grade entrance exam at a good school, you will be happy and content throughout your 3 years of high school. At a good school, most students are self-aware, have a healthy outlook on life, are active, and confident," said Ms. Thuy Minh, who lives in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, about her niece taking the 10th grade entrance exam this year.

Parents do not put pressure

Ms. Minh continued: "After a while of analyzing, my sister complained that life is difficult now, income is decreasing, not to mention the possibility of losing her job at any time. Therefore, if the children pass the entrance exam to a public high school, it will greatly reduce the burden on parents. Especially when the State exempts tuition fees for high school students from the next school year.

I think what my sister-in-law said is not wrong. But her constant talking has put a lot of pressure on my niece. There are only three days left until the 10th grade entrance exam, but she studies until 2am every day.

I advised him to take time to sleep and rest to maintain his health, but he said he was too worried and afraid of failing 10th grade so he couldn't sleep early.

Similarly, Mr. Huy and his wife, who live in Binh Thanh district, argued because Mr. Huy set a condition for his son: "If you don't pass Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School, you'll be out on the streets."

Sharing with us, Ms. Mai, Mr. Huy's wife, said: "My husband said that he would not be foolish enough to push his child out onto the street. Setting conditions is just a way to motivate the child to try harder in the 10th grade entrance exam. I do not agree with this method because it will create more pressure for the child, making him more stressed.

When the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced the number of candidates registering for the 10th grade exam, seeing that the competition rate for admission to Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School was the highest in the city, I advised my child to change his wishes, but my husband absolutely did not agree.

Stories of parents putting pressure on their children are not uncommon during this exam season and have left behind consequences. According to Ms. T. - a 9th grade homeroom teacher in Thu Duc City, some students suffered from reflux and stomachaches on exam day due to too much pressure and anxiety.

"Therefore, I hope parents will create a happy atmosphere in the family, helping their children feel comfortable before the exam. Whether students do well on the test or not depends a lot on their mental health and well-being," Ms. T. advised.

Stay healthy

"During the 10th grade entrance exam season last year, my whole family learned a lesson for life when my son went out to eat and party with his classmates just two days before the official exam," said Nguyen Thu Hang, a parent in District 3.

Ms. Hang simply thought that her child had finished studying, and that it was close to the exam day, so she let her child go out to play and have fun with friends. Unexpectedly, that evening, her child had a severe stomachache and had to go to the toilet frequently.

"The condition persisted until the next day and did not improve, so I immediately took my child to the hospital. As a result, he had an intestinal infection. Although the doctor prescribed medicine, he could not recover completely. On the day of the exam, my child still had a stomachache and could not do as well as he wanted," said Ms. Hang.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thuy - principal of Van Don Secondary School, District 4, there are three things that she often reminds 9th grade students.

"First, you must take care of your health, get enough sleep, and especially not eat out but eat at home in the days close to the exam to avoid digestive problems.

Second, avoid leaving your papers and exam materials at home. For many years now, during the last day of school for 9th graders, the school will give each student a folder to hold their registration form, temporary graduation certificate, pens, rulers, etc. to take with them to the exam.

Third is the subjective mentality when taking the test. Some students, when reading the questions, find the questions too easy and within their reach, so they leave them for later, prioritizing the difficult questions first. This leads to unfairly losing points because later they may not have enough time to do the easy questions," Ms. Thuy shared.

Meanwhile, Ms. Hua Thi Diem Tram, principal of Ha Huy Tap Secondary School in Binh Thanh District, said that many candidates often have the problem of being late because they were too hungover the night before, staying up until 2-3am before going to sleep. In the morning, they were supposed to wake up early to take the exam but couldn’t get up. There were cases where students were late for the exam because their parents stayed up with them and overslept the next morning.

"This year, like many years before, the homeroom teachers of grade 9 at Ha Huy Tap Secondary School will be waiting in front of the exam council gate, taking attendance and encouraging the students. If the time is near and the students have not arrived at the exam site, they must immediately call their parents.

As for the students who live with their grandparents, the teachers told them to turn on their phones. In the morning, the homeroom teacher will call and wake them up so they can take the exam on time," said Ms. Tram.

Things to note when taking the 10th grade entrance exam

In the coming days, you should allocate time reasonably to rest, review your knowledge, review your common mistakes... Especially, you need to take care of your health, pay attention not to eat foods that irritate the stomach; carefully prepare all kinds of papers, pens, and study tools for the official exam day.

Before the exam, you should not eat too much, should not drink too much water to keep the best mood in the exam room, be confident and comfortable when solving the questions to avoid anxiety and instability in the exam room. When taking the exam, you need to carefully do the parts you are sure of; read and complete the easy questions, questions that are your strengths first.

On June 3, the entrance exam for grade 10 public high schools in Da Nang officially ended. According to records at many testing sites, candidates and teachers assessed that this year's exam closely followed the content of the grade 9 program, in accordance with the innovation orientation of the 2018 GeneralEducation Program.

The exam questions reduce the requirement for mechanical memorization, focusing on the ability to apply knowledge in practical situations. Especially in math, the questions consist of 6 questions, with a familiar structure but no longer have the "special" type of questions related to Viet's theorem like previous years. Instead, there are situations close to life, requiring students to read, understand the questions and apply them flexibly, instead of just memorizing the formulas.

Ms. Tran Thi Thuong - math teacher at Tay Son Secondary School (Hai Chau District) - said that this year's exam closely follows the orientation of assessing students' qualities and abilities according to the new program's objectives. The exam structure is kept stable as the announced sample exam, helping the school to be proactive in teaching and reviewing.

Ms. Thuong commented that the math questions were well differentiated, with about 70% of the questions at the recognition and comprehension level. Students who have mastered the basic knowledge and have practiced many reference questions can easily achieve a score of 7. The practical problems are familiar to students, but if they do not read the questions carefully and identify the correct keywords, they may still encounter difficulties.

According to Mr. Pham Tan Ngoc Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang, the exam took place safely and seriously, without any incidents or violations. The total number of candidates registered for the exam was 11,676, of which 55 candidates were absent without reason.

"From June 5 to 20, the exam marking will be carried out. It is expected that the admission scores for public high schools will be announced before June 22," said Mr. Thuy.

On June 4, students took the entrance exam to grade 10 at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted with specialized subjects.
