Italy beat Spain, won a hat-trick of Davis Cup titles

(Dan Tri) - Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the Italian team to win the Davis Cup for the third consecutive time after defeating Spain in Bologna on the night of November 23.

In the opening match, Berrettini played brilliantly, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4, giving the home team a favorable start. In the remaining singles match, Cobolli created a spectacular comeback. After losing seven of the first eight games to Jaume Munar, the young Italian player turned the match around to win 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, sending the coaching staff and the audience into an emotional explosion.

With this victory, Italy became the first team since the United States (1968-1972) to win the Davis Cup three years in a row, after the two most recent titles in Malaga in 2023 and 2024.

Berrettini continued his impressive form in the final, hitting 13 aces and not facing a single break point in 79 minutes. The 29-year-old, currently ranked 56th in the ATP rankings, has won all 11 of his Davis Cup matches since 2022.

Carrying the team's expectations, the 23-year-old Cobolli showed remarkable courage. After a slow start and an early break in the second set, he broke his serve to level the match, before successfully taking advantage of the seventh set point to drag the match into a deciding set. In the third set, the Italian delivered the decisive blow in game 11 to close out the spectacular comeback. This was a memorable week for Cobolli, who saved seven match points in his semi-final win over Zizou Bergs (Belgium).

On the other side of the net, Spain are in their first Davis Cup final since winning the 2019 title, after overcoming the Czech Republic and Germany on their way to the trophy.
