Alcaraz No. 1, but the title goes to Sinner

Jannik Sinner won the final grand final of a fascinating season , a tennis feast of the highest order because it broke free from the usual monotony.

All roads eventually led back to the two of them, and this time victory belonged to the Italian, whose performance was as perfect, complete and seemingly endless, as the straight walls of Piazza San Carlo (the iconic square in Turin, built in the 16th and 17th centuries) .

Carlos Alcaraz – who officially won the ATP No. 1 ranking in 2025 before the final – could not find the key . Their sixth confrontation of the year was decided exactly the way the Italian audience wanted: 7-6 (7-4) and 7-5 for Sinner after 2 hours and 15 minutes .

This is Sinner 's home, and he is the master. With his ATP Finals double, Sinner joins the ranks of successful title defenders, joining Ilie Nastase, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Lleyton Hewitt, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Winning lifted a mental burden off Sinner's shoulders. Either innovate or be left behind . His new formula was working .

It was a perfect week, not dropping a set in five matches, hitting 41 aces (an average of over eight per match). Well deserved. This was his territory, his environment, where he belonged.

Sinner (24 years old) became the youngest person to defend the ATP Finals title since Roger Federer in 2003-2004 (23 years old) .

Additionally, he is the first male player in the 21st century to win consecutive ATP Finals titles without dropping a set (currently winning 20 consecutive sets at the event). The first to achieve this feat was Ivan Lendl (1985-1986).

The Italian ended the year on a high note with six titles, and felt even better . His plan worked.

Master Sinner

Having collapsed in New York two months ago, so pale that day, he returned home satisfied. Sinner won from Beijing, Vienna, Paris and now Turin with a new way of playing.

I had to change ,” Sinner said after the US Open. Right. On the brink, he hit a second serve as fast as a first to escape.

Perfectly canceling out set points, Sinner won the first set in a tie-break , amid two interruptions – one from a crowd disturbance; the second from Alcaraz's muscle pain.

The crowd cheered for more. “Jannik !!!” kept ringing out, to the point that Sinner repeatedly signaled for silence so that Alcaraz could serve. He responded to the crowd’s enthusiasm in the most fervent way.

Entering the second set, Sinner served and was broken in the first game of the 2025 ATP Finals (thereby breaking a 45-game winning streak at the event). No problem, he turned the situation around immediately and pushed Alcaraz into despair.

Alcaraz started to get irritated at 4-4. “Talk to yourself positively!” , head coach Juan Ferrero reminded . Coach Samuel Lopez added : “Scream loudly, let it out.” It didn’t work. The world No. 1 made mistakes, or his shots were read by Sinner.

When “Carlitos” was desperate, Sinner’s new weapons appeared: incredibly soft wrists; perfect lob; beautiful forehand; and another lightning-fast second serve. Interspersed with a long backhand that sent the ball almost perfectly into the back corner, Turin exploded again.

It was a battle of moments, of emotions. Sinner even raised his hand to his ear in celebration, a familiar style of his opponent: “Shout louder!” The whole court responded. That was when he won after a 24-shot rally.

“Maestro Sinner !” (Master Sinner), that’s what the Italians call him. The best version, where he was king – undefeated for 2 years on indoor courts.

The last two games were simply Sinner's. The final image is of him lying down on the field in celebration, followed by the stands with many emotions.

Master Sinner pushed Alcaraz into despair. But that's why 2026 is even more worth waiting for, because they complement each other, constantly improving after each failure.
