Telegram founder, billionaire Pavel Durov, has been detained in France, according to TASS news agency.
TASS quoted information from the LCI media agency (France) saying that Mr. Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport while traveling with his girlfriend and a bodyguard.
Mr. Durov is a French-Russian billionaire, founder and CEO of the messaging app Telegram.
The site ranks as one of the major social media platforms after Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Wechat.
TF1 TV and BFM TV (France) channels, citing anonymous sources, said that Mr. Pavel Durov was arrested on the evening of August 24 to serve a preliminary police investigation focusing on the lack of censorship measures on the Telegram website.
Encrypted Telegram, with nearly a billion users, is particularly influential in Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet states.
Telegram said the French Interior Ministry and police have not yet made official comments on the incident.
Meanwhile, TASS news agency quoted a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry saying that the Russian Embassy in France had taken the necessary steps to clarify the situation surrounding the arrest of Pavel Durov./.
