The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially announced that Vietnam will be one of the host countries for the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers. Thus, Vietnam U23 will play the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers at home.

This decision was made at the meeting of the AFC Competition Committee held today (April 30). Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan, President of the Vietnam Football Federation, chaired the meeting in his capacity as a member of the Standing Committee and Head of the AFC Competition Committee.

The 2026 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers will feature 44 teams, divided into 11 groups of four teams each. Matches will be played in a round-robin format at each host venue from September 1 to September 9.

The 11 group winners and the four best runners-up will qualify for the 2026 AFC U23 Championship, along with hosts Saudi Arabia, who will be given a direct entry.

Besides the group of U.23 Vietnam held at home, 10 other countries were also awarded the right to host including: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Qatar, Tajikistan, Thailand and UAE.

U.23 Vietnam is the number 1 seed

As planned, the draw ceremony will take place on May 29 at AFC headquarters.

With the achievement of reaching the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship, Vietnam U23 is ranked in the No. 1 seed group, along with Japan, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Indonesia, South Korea, Qatar, China, Tajikistan and Kuwait, thereby creating more favorable conditions to aim for the goal of participating in the 2026 AFC U23 Championship finals.

To prepare for the 2026 AFC U.23 qualifiers, the VFF will continue to create conditions for the Vietnam U.23 team to gather and train at the same time as the national team's FIFA Days.

Most recently, the team had a very good "test" at the international tournament U.22 CFA Team China 2025, held last March with the participation of U.23 Korea, U.23 Uzbekistan and U.23 China.

Vietnam U.23 has continuously participated in the U.23 Asian finals from 2016 to present, with the peak being the runner-up position in 2018. The last time playing in the U.23 Asian tournament (2024), Vietnam U.23 under the coaching of Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan reached the quarter-finals.
