U22 Vietnam meets U22 Malaysia in the group stage of SEA Games 33

In Group B of the 33rd SEA Games men's football, U23 Malaysia and U22 Laos are considered to be strong opponents for U22 Vietnam as we have defeated these opponents many times in the regional arena. In 2 out of 3 recent tournaments, U22 (at times U23) Vietnam also met Laos and defeated them in the group stage.

Defending champion U22 Indonesia is in group C with U22 Myanmar, U22 Philippines and U22 Singapore.

Host U22 Thailand is in group A with opponents Cambodia and Timor Leste.

The match of U22 Thailand will take place in Songkhla province. The matches of U22 Vietnam group B and group C will take place in Chiang Mai province.

The semi-finals, finals and third-place matches of men's football at the 33rd SEA Games will take place at Rajamangala Stadium (Bangkok).

Thailand U22 is the team that has won the most gold medals in men's football at the SEA Games since 2001 (7 medals). Vietnam U23 has only won 2 gold medals (2019 and 2021). In the most recent congress in 2023, Vietnam U22 under the leadership of coach Philippe Troussier only won the bronze medal.

In women's football, the Vietnamese women's team is in Group B with Myanmar, Malaysia and the very strong Philippines. The Thai women's team is in Group A with Indonesia, Singapore and Cambodia.

The 33rd SEA Games will take place from December 9 to 20 in Thailand. The Vietnamese sports delegation is expected to have around 1,000 members. The U22 men's football team has been assigned the target of qualifying for the final match. The women's football team aims to win the gold medal.
