Australia assesses bushfire damage in Grampians National Park

(CLO) On December 29, the government of Victoria state, Australia, continued its efforts to control and assess the damage from the large bushfire in Grampians National Park last week.

The fire has spread over 74,000 hectares, destroying three homes and several warehouses in the eastern part of the national park, according to a statement from authorities.

Warnings remain in place for several towns near the Grampians, as the risk of spreading fires continues to threaten local communities.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to visit the area later today to assess the situation first-hand and assist in the response.

According to ABC News, these fires have caused significant environmental damage, with thousands of wildlife and livestock killed. In addition, many infrastructures such as power lines, fences, and communication towers have been destroyed or severely damaged.

Authorities have warned of a summer of high wildfire risk after several quiet seasons. The 2019-2020 “Black Summer” wildfires destroyed an area the size of Türkiye and killed 33 people.

Authorities are urging people in high-risk areas to follow bushfire safety advice and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. VicEmergency says the threat has eased but people should continue to monitor the situation as it could change at any time.

Fire control efforts and emergency assistance will continue in the coming days to minimize damage to communities and the environment.
