Kiev targeted a popular local bakery at the weekend, an attack that comes nearly two years after Russia began its special military operation in Ukraine.
Lysychansk, a city in the Lugansk region with a population of about 110,000, has been under Russian control since then.
In a recent report on February 4, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said that many more people may have died in the rubble of the bakery.
"In Lysychansk, employees of the Russian Emergencies Ministry found the bodies of 20 people under the rubble," the ministry said on Telegram.
Video footage shows rescuers working in the dark, pulling a dead body from the rubble before finding an injured woman alive and placing her on a stretcher to carry her out of the heavily damaged building.
Earlier, the Moscow-appointed governor of Lugansk, Leonid Pasechnik, said that "dozens" of people could be trapped under the building. Russian media quoted local police as saying that "up to 40 people" could be trapped under the rubble. However, there was no official information on the number of people killed or injured in the attack.
At least 12 people were taken to hospital, with another 20 trapped under debris, according to Almayadeen . Local emergency officials said rescue efforts would continue through the night.
This incident took place in the context of escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia. The international community continues to call on the parties to negotiate and seek a peaceful solution to end the conflict and ensure regional security and stability.
