Reuters quoted military spokesman Serhiy Cherevaty as telling ICTV on March 18: "We are still providing the necessary ammunition, food, equipment and medicine to Bakhmut . We are also trying to get the wounded out of the city."
Mr Cherevaty added that Ukrainian reconnaissance and counter-battery fire helped. opened the way into the city. Ukraine also claimed to have caused heavy casualties to the enemy, as well as shooting down two drones and destroying five ammunition depots on March 17 alone.
Reuters said it could not independently verify the claim.

Also on March 18, the Ukrainian air force announced on Telegram that several explosive-laden drones had attacked the country overnight, some of them flying into the country’s western Lviv region, which has been less affected by the conflict. Ukraine said 11 of the 16 drones were shot down.
Regional Governor Maksym Kozytski said the attack occurred around 1 a.m. in the city of Yavoriv, targeting uninhabited facilities, causing damage but no casualties.
The southeastern city of Dnipro also reported shooting down three drones.
Russia claims to intercept US HIMARS
According to TASS, Russian air defense forces said on March 18 that in the previous 24 hours they had successfully intercepted 15 missiles from Ukraine, fired by the HIMARS "fire god" (aided by the US) as well as the Soviet-made Smerch and Uragan systems.
In addition, the country said it destroyed nine enemy drones in several locations in the Lugansk and Donetsk regions and caused heavy losses in human lives and other military supplies along the front line.
