As one of the active units in implementing digital transformation, Bai Chay Hospital has always been a pioneer in the Quang Ninh Health sector in applying AI to examination, diagnosis and treatment activities. With the strength of specialized treatment of tumors, if in the past, early detection of lung lesions or diseases, especially lung cancer, required doctors to have high professional qualifications, extensive experience, as well as modern equipment, now with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this process becomes faster, more accurate and comprehensive. From the second quarter of 2025, when Bai Chay Hospital put into parallel testing the application of AI in lung imaging diagnosis, it has supported doctors in early detection of lesions and timely treatment decisions.
Dr. Le Thi Luyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Bai Chay Hospital, said: With the ability to detect and analyze detailed lesions quickly and accurately, AI allows doctors not to miss any lesions, thereby being able to predict early disease conditions, monitor to prevent and treat early, bringing higher treatment efficiency for patients, especially patients with lung cancer or at risk of lung cancer.

Along with that, on the basis of electronic medical records that have been effectively deployed in recent years, the Hospital has integrated AI, upgraded important features in treatment activities such as: Supporting image diagnosis, managing medical records and providing the most appropriate treatment regimen according to the trend of personalizing each patient, early warning to prevent medical errors... contributing significantly to helping doctors improve the quality of medical examination and treatment. In the coming time, the hospital will also continue to promote the application of AI in management processes, review and professional standardization, helping to improve the quality and ensure safety for medical examination and treatment activities.
At the Provincial General Hospital, since 2021, the Hospital has successfully deployed AI Rapid software in imaging diagnosis for patients with acute cerebral infarction. This software is capable of analyzing brain images from CT or MRI scan results in a very short time, only from 30 seconds to 2 minutes and providing accurate analysis results on the location of the lesion, the volume of the necrotic brain area and the brain area at risk of damage in the following hours. What is special is that through the application of Rapid software, the "intervention window" for cerebral stroke patients has been expanded to 24 hours instead of just the first 6 hours as before. Thanks to that, many patients, even if admitted late, still have the opportunity to be saved and minimize severe sequelae.

Over the past 2 years, the Hospital has gradually digitized treatment regimens, combined clinical pharmacy warnings, built and put into operation a level 3 clinical decision support system (CDSS) in medical examination and treatment. The system helps doctors determine accurate diagnoses, suggests standardized treatment regimens according to national guidelines, and provides early warnings of drug interactions and medical errors. This solution has brought about clear results in standardizing, optimizing and personalizing the diagnosis and treatment process for patients.
Not only supporting treatment, the unified coding of medical records according to international ICD standards also helps in effective management and quality monitoring. Managers can track each medical order, evaluate the level of compliance with the treatment regimen of the doctor, and control the cost of medical examination and treatment, ensuring transparency, science and savings for the health insurance fund.
From this basic system, the Provincial General Hospital will also apply AI to the entire hospital management system, from medical examination and treatment to management, promoting comprehensive digital transformation at the hospital, towards a safe, smart and personalized patient care model in the near future.
Dr. Nguyen Ba Viet, Director of the Provincial General Hospital, said: In the context of increasingly complex disease models, many people suffer from multiple chronic diseases at the same time, the need for personalized treatment is more urgent than ever. In the next 1 to 2 years, we will update AI and perfect AI in hospital management and patient examination and treatment, aiming to optimize treatment.

The efforts of Bai Chay Hospital and the Provincial General Hospital have also shown the proactive and pioneering spirit of the Quang Ninh Health sector in digital transformation, focusing on patients. Since 2024, Quang Ninh has ensured that 100% of medical examination and treatment facilities have deployed electronic medical records, 1 year earlier than the Ministry of Health's request. During this term, digital transformation and AI application in healthcare continue to be important tasks set by the sector.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Dien, Director of the Department of Health, affirmed: Implementing Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the development of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, the Quang Ninh Health sector will strongly develop science and technology in health, especially the application of AI, IOT - Internet of Things in public health care. After completing the digitalization of the current huge health data system, the Health sector will continue to connect health records between communes and provinces, from provinces to the central level, thereby helping patients to access the best medical examination and treatment right at the local level, as well as the best health care management right at the grassroots level.
