Many effective models and methods
After 2 years of implementation, in early 2024, the research team of Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry, led by Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc Hoan, completed the project "Research on epidemiological characteristics and measures to prevent and control lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows in Bac Giang province". This scientific project has identified the type and circulation of the virus causing lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows. From there, many households in Hiep Hoa district and Viet Yen town have been guided to build a model of disease-free cattle farming. Mr. Nguyen Van Hoan's household, Ranh residential group, Tu Lan ward (Viet Yen town) is one of the households participating in the model.

Every year, Mr. Hoan's family raises more than 50 3B cows. In previous years, some cows were infected with lumpy skin disease, causing poor growth and economic losses. Since 2022, thanks to the application of solutions guided by the research team, the herd has been disease-free and growing healthily.
Mr. Hoan shared: “We pay attention to disinfecting the barns before releasing the animals and periodically twice a week during the raising process. In case of an outbreak in the surrounding area, we spray disinfectant once a day; fully vaccinate the animals. The cows are fed straw, grass, bean dregs, fermented soybean hulls and supplemented with biological products to help increase resistance."
It is known that the raising time for each batch is nearly 6 months; when sold, each cow weighs about 400 kg, the average selling price is nearly 30 million VND/cow. From raising cows, Mr. Hoan's family has a revenue of more than 1 billion VND/year. Currently, many other households in Lang Giang, Luc Ngan districts and Viet Yen town have also been transferred the technique of caring for and preventing lumpy skin disease for buffalo and cows.
The Vù hương tree is a rare species, with high economic value for its wood and essential oil. In previous years, the number of species was not much, mainly growing naturally in the Tay Yen Tu Nature Reserve (Son Dong). To restore and promote the value of the Vù hương tree, Bac Giang province has paid attention to coordinating with the Vietnam Forestry Science Institute and a number of related units to research and build a model for planting this tree in Luc Ngan district to transfer good breeds, technical advances, and improve productivity and quality of planted forests.
According to the Department of Science and Technology, from 2021 to present, the whole province has more than 150 provincial and grassroots scientific research topics and projects in various fields; of which 60 topics and projects are in the agricultural sector, applying biotechnology. Most of the projects are recognized for their effectiveness in application and replication in practice; helping to solve limitations in agriculture such as low productivity, diseases, environmental pollution, etc. |
Up to now, Bac Giang has had 0.5 ha of seed and cutting nursery in Tan Lap commune (Luc Ngan) with thousands of quality seedlings and 5 ha of intensively planted agarwood forest in the same location. More than 90% of the trees grow healthily, nearly 5 m high, and are cared for according to technical procedures. Recently, many households in and outside the district have been interested in propagating and planting agarwood for high economic value, preventing erosion, and contributing to environmental protection.
These are two of hundreds of effective models and solutions related to research and application of biotechnology in agricultural production. According to the Department of Science and Technology, from 2021 to present, the whole province has more than 150 provincial and grassroots scientific research topics and projects in various fields; of which 60 topics and projects are in the agricultural sector, applying biotechnology. Most of the projects are recognized as effective and replicated in practice, helping to increase productivity, prevent diseases, overcome environmental pollution, etc.
For example, the models: Using MF1 to build a model of Caribbean pine plantation; producing forestry seedlings by tissue culture method; applying technical solutions to manage the phenomenon of yellow leaves on orange trees in Luc Ngan district; improving and developing the Bore crossbred goat herd in Luc Ngan, Yen The through perfecting the technical process of sex separation; using biological products in straw treatment, pest control, etc.
Promote application
Research and application of biotechnology in agricultural production have made remarkable progress. This has been achieved thanks to Bac Giang province's proactive implementation of Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated January 30, 2023 of the Politburo on the development and application of biotechnology to serve the country's sustainable development in the new situation.

According to the assigned functions and tasks, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Department of Science and Technology and relevant localities and units have advised, directed and implemented many solutions. The consistent viewpoint is that research and application of biotechnology must exploit and maximize the potential and advantages of the locality. However, some small-scale models are difficult to replicate; some research projects on applying biotechnology in agricultural production have not been successful and have exceeded the deadline.
In order to replicate biotechnology application models, in the coming time, departments and branches will continue to coordinate with local Party committees and authorities to pay attention to propaganda to raise awareness and responsibility for officials, businesses and people about the position, role and importance of biotechnology application in agriculture. Regularly train, transfer technology and technical advances to production facilities, businesses, cooperatives and people.
Mr. Le Ba Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, emphasized that the agricultural sector continues to adhere to the common goal of developing biotechnology to serve safe, circular, organic agricultural production, applying high technology with high added value; building and expanding models of applying biotechnology in preserving and processing agricultural products to diversify and increase product value; researching, testing, selecting and creating key plant and animal varieties with superior characteristics, resistance to pests and diseases, adaptability to climate change, high productivity, quality and economic efficiency.
In the coming time, Bac Giang province will continue to strengthen domestic and international cooperation to access, learn, transfer and master valuable biotechnology research results in production. Proactively seek and grasp information on international cooperation programs and projects in this field to propose funding and support. Pay attention to training on biotechnology for officials and people in the area; train human resources to participate in research and technology transfer activities. At the same time, promptly reward and commend outstanding collectives and individuals; replicate good and effective practices; strictly handle violations in the process of implementing the task of developing and applying biotechnology in production.
