Hereditary cancers account for 5 to 15% of all cancers.

Cancer is a large group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells and is also the most concerned group of diseases in the world and in Vietnam.

On June 14, Bach Mai Hospital organized the "Cancer Genetics" Conference with the participation of many domestic and international doctors and cancer experts, focusing on updating the latest advances in the world in the field of cancer diagnosis, treatment and genetic counseling: genetic diagnosis, targeted therapy, molecular biology and genetic counseling for cancer patients.

Reporting at the conference, experts said that currently, cancer is not only increasing in incidence but also tends to be younger, partly due to the important role of genetic factors. Basically, genetics is the inheritance of information (genes) that determine biological characteristics through generations, and in some cases, this includes cancer genetics, which is the inheritance of specific gene mutations that increase the risk of cancer compared to normal people. For this reason, people with a family history of cancer often have a higher rate of this disease.

Genetic assessment is one of the important bases in screening and early diagnosis of diseases. Early diagnosis combined with advances in treatment can increase the cure rate and improve the quality of life for patients.

In addition, advances in screening, diagnosis and genetic counseling help detect cases at an early stage, especially for those at high risk such as those with a family history of the disease.

International experts are discussing at the conference.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Tung, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital shared: hereditary cancer is a type of cancer directly related to genetic mutations and accounts for 5-15% of cancers. These mutations often affect genes that control cell division and DNA repair, leading to uncontrolled cell growth, thereby forming tumors. Common hereditary cancers include: breast, colorectal, ovarian... Early detection of genetic mutations can help patients and their families take preventive measures or have regular health check-ups to detect cancer at an early stage, increasing the chance of effective treatment and prolonging survival.

With the strength of a special-class general hospital, many leading fields such as: Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Pathology, Gene therapy, molecular biology... patients coming to Bach Mai Hospital have access to modern diagnostic and treatment methods in the most comprehensive way. After a multidisciplinary consultation, the most optimal diagnosis and treatment plan will be given to the patient.

The hospital also focuses on early detection of diseases through close coordination between specialties such as oncology, diagnostic imaging, pathology, genetics and molecular biology. Among them, genetic testing, a type of testing that identifies changes in a person's genes, plays an increasingly important role.

The significance of genetic testing in cancer is enormous, especially in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the disease. It allows to determine genetic risk, better understand the biological characteristics of the tumor, choose the most effective treatment methods such as targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and monitor disease progression more accurately.

Nowadays, with the advancement of modern and advanced diagnostic methods such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, disease diagnosis at the gene level, molecular biology combined with treatment methods such as targeted drugs, immunotherapy... have helped prolong life and improve the quality of life for patients.
