Mobilizing support for people to develop the economy and reduce poverty

Leaders of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of Cai Rang District Party Committee and the Thuong Thanh Ward delegation visited and learned about the operation of the Fruit Tree Growing Cooperative model established by the Ward Farmers' Association.

The Fruit Tree Growing Cooperative Group (THT) is one of the effective collective economic models in the locality. According to Ms. Luu Kim Hoang, Chairman of the Farmers' Association (FA) of Thuong Thanh Ward, the THT was established in 2021, currently has 14 members, with a cultivation area of ​​4.4 hectares, mainly cultivating fruit trees such as red-fleshed jackfruit, idol longan, plum... Joining the THT, members are supported with loans according to their needs to invest in production; meeting periodically every quarter, sharing experiences in planting, caring for fruit trees and finding outlets for products. Mr. Pham Van Ba, Head of the Cooperative Group, shared: “I am cultivating 7 hectares of garden, including 2 hectares of red-fleshed jackfruit and 5 hectares of green sugar plum. Each hectare of red-fleshed jackfruit after deducting expenses brings in about 40 million VND/year. Last year, green sugar plum alone produced a lot of fruit, 5 hectares of plum yielded more than 3 tons of fruit, which I sold for 50,000 VND/kg. This year, the productivity and output are both higher than last year. It is estimated that after deducting expenses, each hectare of green sugar plum, the grower earns a profit of over 50 million VND/year.”

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang, a member of the Fruit Tree Growing Cooperative, said his family has 8 hectares of land. For about 5 years now, thanks to the Farmers' Association's propaganda and mobilization, Mr. Hoang has switched to growing Ido longan and joined the Cooperative. Mr. Hoang confided: "The Ward Farmers' Association has made a request for the agricultural extension sector to subsidize (50% of the cost) the installation of an automatic sprinkler irrigation system, thanks to which the care of the garden is easier. It is estimated that after deducting the cost of each Ido longan, growers earn a profit of 25-30 million VND/year."

The mud-free eel farming cooperative model with 9 members is also proving effective. Ms. Luu Kim Hoang said: “On average, each batch raises about 10,000 eel fry. After 10-12 months, farmers can sell them. After deducting all expenses, cooperative members earn a profit of about 80-100 million VND.”

According to Ms. Trinh Ngoc Bich, Head of the Mass Mobilization Bloc, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the ward, in order to achieve the goal of poverty reduction and help people improve their living standards, the Party Committee directed the People's Committee, the Mass Mobilization Bloc and the ward's mass organizations to help union members, association members and people build effective economic models; focusing on training and transferring science and technology. At the same time, the mass organizations also effectively managed 29 loan groups from the Social Policy Bank (CSXH) with a total outstanding debt of 63 billion VND, supporting more than 1,200 union members, association members and people to access preferential loans to invest in planting, raising livestock and small trading.

Thanks to a loan from the Bank for Social Policies, Ms. Nguyen Hong Chan, a member of the Women's Union, was able to renovate her mixed garden to grow seedless lemons. Ms. Chan said: “With the encouragement, guidance and financial support from the Women's Union, 4 years ago, I converted 3 hectares of mixed garden to grow 450 seedless lemon trees. About 2 years later, the lemons bore fruit. Each hectare of lemons yields about 30 million VND/year. In 2024, I will continue to convert the entire remaining area to grow seedless lemons.”

With practical support solutions, in 2024, Thuong Thanh Ward will have 3 households escape poverty. “Currently, Thuong Thanh Ward has no poor households. We will continue to coordinate to implement many solutions to support people to develop production, reduce poverty sustainably, and improve living standards” - Ms. Trinh Ngoc Bich shared.

Ms. Le Thi Thuy Loan, Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of Cai Rang District Party Committee, assessed: “The political system of Thuong Thanh Ward has done a good job of propagating and mobilizing people to change the structure of crops and livestock to increase income. The Ward Mass Mobilization Bloc has advised the Party Committee and the Steering Committee to implement the Grassroots Democracy Regulations of the Ward, directed organizations to organize field trips for members and exchange experiences; at the same time, trained and transferred science and technology for people to apply in production, and rise out of poverty.”
