- Promoting the value of intangible cultural heritage
- Rich cultural heritage
- Pay more attention to the protection and promotion of historical and cultural relics
- Culture is soft power, the endless 'original energy' of the Vietnamese people.
On this occasion, reporters from Ca Mau Newspaper and Radio and Television had an interview with Writer Phan Trung Nghia.

- The political art documentary project " Bac Lieu - Cultural Depth" is based on the idea from your book "A Page of Life Opens Up", can you share about the structure and content of the film?
Writer Phan Trung Nghia : My book “A page of life opens” is a literary memoir, over 400 pages long, about the cultural characteristics of Bac Lieu. The film “Bac Lieu cultural depth” is based on the idea of my book, not the original. The main similarity is the cultural values of Bac Lieu and how the power is aroused from those values.
The book was published at a time when Bac Lieu was an old province, and now it is the new Ca Mau province. Therefore, we temporarily divided it into 6 episodes as follows: the first 3 episodes talk about the history of land reclamation, the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism of Bac Lieu army and people under the leadership of the Party and the period of construction after the complete liberation of the South. Through that life, we tried to identify and separate the cultural values that have been cherished, warmed the souls and personalities of Bac Lieu people, creating the identity of Bac Lieu.
The political art documentary "Bac Lieu - Cultural Depth" is based on the idea from the book "A Page of Life Opens" by writer Phan Trung Nghia.
The next two episodes talk about the period 2010-2015 when the old province of Bac Lieu "saw" and promoted cultural development, which was then called "Bac Lieu rising from culture". In the eyes of the filmmakers, the period when Bac Lieu rose from culture was an extremely interesting period, it was a vivid reality of a precious experience for development. Bac Lieu's culture is unique but many places and regions also have it. However, few places can turn it into soft power, endogenous power, and become a resource for development.
I remember at that time, after the launch of the "Bac Lieu rises from culture" signal, Bac Lieu really changed. Intangible cultural values were deeply explored and thoroughly mobilized, typical tangible cultural works sprung up.... In the multi-faceted development at that time, Bac Lieu's investment attraction increased unprecedentedly, the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) jumped from the bottom to the top of the country.
In the final episode, we will reflect the direction of the new Ca Mau province's leadership in preserving and promoting the potential, advantages, and cultural strength of the old Bac Lieu in the space and development orientation of the new Ca Mau. If funding is favorable, we will make another episode to fully express the smooth and attractive transition between the new Ca Mau province and the old Bac Lieu culture.
- It is known that the film crew is a professional team and passionate about Bac Lieu land. Can you share about this combination?
Writer Phan Trung Nghia: It can be said that the first joy is that the film "Bac Lieu - Cultural Depth" was born from the suggestions, help and participation in content assessment of many comrades, from former leaders of Bac Lieu province to scholars, cultural researchers, artists, journalists inside and outside the province. These are people who are wholeheartedly devoted to their homeland Bac Lieu, very passionate about Bac Lieu culture, and are the pioneers with the Executive Committee of the Bac Lieu Provincial Party Committee at that time to establish the "philosophy" of development "Bac Lieu rising from culture".
The first days of filming the political art documentary "Bac Lieu cultural depth".
Second, the film has the cooperation of a very professional art documentary film company. Third, the film is made by director Vo Dac Du, who specializes in making art documentaries, with many years of experience, participating in many large film projects. And another hopeful thing is that Vo Dac Du was born in Bac Lieu, his mother is a Vietnamese Heroic Mother, he is imbued with Bac Lieu culture and is very passionate about it.
This film also has a team of experienced cinematographers from Ho Chi Minh City and the locality. As for me, I participated as a screenwriter and executive producer, and I was born and raised in Bac Lieu. Making the film is like rekindling the fire to warm the soul of the land that once held our umbilical cord.
- The film delves into the history of Bac Lieu land and people, from indigenous culture and the journey of land opening of our ancestors. So, in your opinion, what are the most typical cultural marks of Bac Lieu that the film will highlight?
Writer Phan Trung Nghia: The old Bac Lieu province is a land with a history of 300 years, during that time of labor, exploration, construction, survival, and fighting for national independence, the three ethnic groups: Kinh, Khmer, and Chinese united to build the "shape" of Bac Lieu today, creating many material and spiritual values. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Bac Lieu has been a top 4 urban economic center of the six provinces of the South, called by the press and common people as the rice province, the salt province. During that process, many things have crystallized into culture.
When mentioning Bac Lieu, people immediately remember the homeland of the immortal "Da co hoai lang" by Mr. Sau Lau, the great cradle of Southern amateur music - the representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Before the merger, Bac Lieu province was a locality ranked in the Mekong Delta in terms of literary and artistic forms, especially theater, photography, literature, architecture...
Writer Phan Trung Nghia (third from left) with many outstanding and outstanding works was honored.
Bac Lieu also has a "Bac Lieu Prince" with a generous personality, but very humane and compassionate. This land is also a place where spiritual culture and beliefs develop very strongly, and is one of the pilgrimage centers of the whole country. The symbol of Bac Lieu culture is that there are up to 55 historical relics and cultural heritages that have been ranked. Notably, Bac Lieu is the only locality that twice took power from the enemy without firing a shot.
The film will try to highlight the above mentioned cultural forms. The most important content that the film exploits is the open-minded, chivalrous, loyal and tolerant character of Bac Lieu people, which is also the soft power to be a resource for the development of the homeland.
- After the project is completed, what kind of impression do you expect the film will leave on the public, not only the people of Bac Lieu but also audiences across the country?
Writer Phan Trung Nghia: Honestly, we filmmakers do not dare to dream too much. We make films with the mindset of a child of the countryside, collecting dry branches to kindle a fire to contribute to warming the land and people of Ca Mau - Bac Lieu today. We also want to express our understanding of an extremely correct policy of our Party on culture, according to which, culture is not only the spiritual foundation of society, but also the endogenous strength , the driving force for sustainable development of the homeland and the country. In my opinion, the film also has reference meaning for localities, especially provinces with limited economic potential, which can still develop if they know how to promote the soft power of culture./.
Thank you!
