On January 9, speaking after talks with European Union (EU) Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen, Slovakian Prime Minister Reobert Fico announced that his country will take retaliatory measures against Ukraine if the issue of stopping the transit of Russian gas through this country is not resolved.

Prime Minister Fico has accused Kiev of damaging Bratislava by not renewing a gas transit deal with Moscow.
Mr Fico threatened to retaliate by cutting off emergency power supplies to Ukraine and reducing aid to refugees.
Previously, on January 7, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas accused Russia of using “gas as a weapon” and launching a hybrid war in Moldova - where the separatist region of Transnistria has had its gas supply cut off since January 1.
Speaking on social network X, Ms. Kallas said that Moldova was once again the target of this country's hybrid war.
“Thanks to the support of the 27-member bloc, Moldova remains resilient and well connected to the European energy network,” Ms. Kallas stressed.
Transnistria - a tiny breakaway region bordering Ukraine - has been without heating and hot water for its residents since the first day of the New Year.
The agreement to transport Russian gas through Ukraine officially ended on December 31, 2024.
