On January 8, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Center for Music Copyright Protection (VCPMC) held a ceremony to summarize its activities in 2024.
In 2024, the Center collected more than 393 billion VND from music copyright use, an increase of 14.2% compared to 2023. Of which, the highest revenue was from websites and music applications, reaching over 305 billion VND; copyright revenue from international CMOs was over 16.9 billion VND; revenue from demo copying and online copying was over 16.4 billion VND; revenue from performances and concerts reached over 12.7 billion VND; revenue from broadcasting was over 7.7 billion VND... In particular, VCPMC carried out 4 distribution periods and paid copyright owners more than 256 billion VND.
In 2024, VCPMC will continue to support and provide legal advice to authors to avoid risks that affect their rights and interests when there are copyright transfer transactions; disseminate and inform members about cases of legal risks, loss of rights, loss of works due to signing a transfer but not carefully reviewing the contract terms, not keeping the contract, list of works for comparison and re-checking when necessary; support and guide authorization documents with inheritance elements.
The Center has surveyed, collected documents, evidence, and filed lawsuits in court on many cases of copyright infringement, typically in the fields of performance rights and copying rights. Up to now, the legal departments of the two regions have handled a total of 79 lawsuits on copyright infringement, intellectual property disputes, and contract disputes; 34 cases have been resolved, the rest are in the process of being resolved; in addition, there are many cases and hundreds of online links (copying works) that are currently collecting documents and evidence to handle violations. Regularly coordinate with authors to review, warn to collect and recover cases of links and channels that violate the online environment.
According to Musician Dinh Trung Can, Director of the Vietnam Music Copyright Protection Center, in 2024, the domestic performing arts market will be quite vibrant, especially with the appearance of international shows, although the scale is not large, but the amount of royalties will decrease compared to 2023 because many organizers still lack awareness and voluntarily fulfill their obligations to pay royalties, and find ways to make things difficult and avoid fulfilling their obligations.
In 2025, VCPMC will continue to review, adjust, and perfect the organizational structure and internal management of the Center according to new regulations; focus on music licensing activities, maintain and increase income from royalties for member authors; strengthen data reconciliation and processing to distribute and pay royalties to authors and owners.
In addition, the Center will be more active in reviewing and surveying the music usage market, handling copyright violations, protecting the legitimate rights and interests of member authors; focusing on member care and development, resolving complaints, providing legal advice to member authors, and organizing mediation when there are disputes and recommendations from member authors.
