Phuong My Chi shines at Sing! Asia 2025. |
The final results of the Sing! Asia 2025 contest on July 25 confirmed Phuong My Chi among the top young Asian singers such as: Miyuna (Japanese pop rock singer/songwriter), Chu Phi Ca and Kha Lau (both from China).
Exploiting Vietnamese folk music
Singer Phuong My Chi's journey at the regional playground has a consistent style: introducing songs that highlight traditional folk materials with modern arrangements, catchy and youthful melodies.
The Universe Has You is a song from Phuong My Chi's Universe of Flying Storks Project in 2023, which she convincingly brought to the Sing! Asia stage. The DTAP group remixed this song by combining symphony, Vietnamese ca tru, a rap part and EDM (electronic dance music). In particular, DTAP pushed the ca tru part to the top, connecting it with the image of Tam and Lo Lem in modern times that My Chi performed enthusiastically on stage.
“The Universe Has You is a journey through space and time for each person to find the most brilliant version of themselves. Chi chose Ca Tru, a very unique feature of Vietnamese culture, to tell that story in a more youthful and intimate way” - Phuong My Chi shared.
If the song Buôn Trăng by Phương Mỹ Chi was inspired by the poem Day thôn Vĩ Dạ (Han Mặc Tử), Bóng hư hoa was inspired by the legendary story Truyện người con gái Nam Xương, Rock Hạt gạo did not hide its invitation to international friends to visit and travel to the homeland of Vietnam right from the opening with the line "Vietnam has white rice and clear water. Whoever goes there will not want to return".
The mashup (combination) of Ly Bac Bo - Pushing the ox cart is inspired by Northern folk songs such as Ba Cong Di Cho Troi Mua, Cay Da Quan Doc, Ba Rang Ba Ri combined with rustic drum performance and lively dance of Phuong My Chi.
Phuong My Chi is successful with a series of songs exploiting Vietnamese folk materials. |
"I feel very fulfilled when performing this performance full of Vietnamese flavor" - Phuong My Chi expressed.
Phuong My Chi's style and charisma are even more impressive through the mashup of Tuy Am - Luc Hai Vi Vuong performed with her colleague Kha Lau (from China) who came to Vietnam to practice for the performance. It was a surprise and a pride when, through DTAP's unique and creative arrangement, Phuong My Chi sang the entire vọng cổ section of the cải lương play Tiếng Trống Mê Linh (Kha Lau followed it up with a Chinese comedy).
"I hope Vietnamese music can fly far in a natural, lively and proud way" - singer Phuong My Chi shared.
Spectacular growth
Phuong My Chi stepped onto the stage of The Voice Kids 2013 when she was only 10 years old, small and shy. Yet at that time she was loved for singing folk songs: Que em mua nuoc lu, Ao moi Ca Mau, Nho me ly mo coi, Dem ganh hao nghe dieu hoai lang… with her simple, sweet voice.
Under the guidance of singer Quang Le, Phuong My Chi released the following folk albums: My Hometown in Flood Season (2014), Love for the Central Region (2017), 16 Spring Moons (2019).
In 2021, Phuong My Chi renewed herself by combining the bolero genre and electronic music in the album Bolero Lau Pha, as a stepping stone for the collaborative album with DTAP Vu tru co bay (2023) inspired by Vietnamese literary works. From here, the female singer has achieved many successes with quality music, a fusion between absorbing the quintessence of traditional art and modern contemporary melodies, loved by young people.
Recent songs such as: Wrapped Mien Tay, Dieu Nguoc Gio, I'll be there or Nha con thuong em ma (a song composed by Phuong My Chi herself and used as the soundtrack for the movie Nha gia tien by director Huynh Lap in which she played the main role for the first time), are all well-staged and attractive products.
On stage, Phuong My Chi appeared in elaborate, form-fitting, and modernly detailed costumes - for example, wearing an outfit inspired by the Ao Tu Than and Non Quai Thao on the Sing! Asia 2025 catwalk.
Choreography is also a distinctly progressive form of Phuong My Chi, contributing to creating impressive visual effects, rich in entertainment colors, affirming the confidence of a generation of young artists who dare to think, dare to do, and have the potential to break through further. Art is a fertile ground for the most promising face in V-Pop today like Phuong My Chi to continue to blossom and shine.
Many Vietnamese singers have exploited traditional Vietnamese folk culture very well in their musical products such as: Chi Pu with the series Cung dan vo doi (Western Cai Luong sound), Anh oi o lai (inspired by the fairy tale Tam Cam); Hoang Thuy Linh with Banh troi nuoc, Ke cap gap ba gia, Tu phu, De Mi noi cho ma nghe, Duyen am...; Duc Phuc sang Het thuong can nho, Bich Phuong sang Bua yeu, Noi thuong nhau thi dung lam trai tim em dau; Hoa Minzy (photo) "stormed" the charts with the MV Bac Bling...
Not forgetting to note that behind the recent resounding successes of Hoang Thuy Linh or Phuong My Chi at present is the producer and composer DTAP, consisting of 3 talented people: Thinh Kainz (29 years old - composing the melody), Kata Tran (28 years old - main role is writing lyrics) and Tung Cedrus (27 years old - arranging and mixing). Or music producer Masew (Le Tuan Anh, 29 years old) is behind the hit products Bac Bling, Buon cua anh, Tuy am...
