Google is urging smartphone users to be more cautious when connecting to public WiFi, as public WiFi in places like cafes, airports, or hotel lobbies can be easily exploited by cybercriminals, India Today reported on November 12.
These criminals can take advantage of unsecured public WiFi to steal sensitive information such as banking logins, personal data, and chat messages.
The warning comes as part of Google's latest report on text scams, which highlights public Wi-Fi as a growing security threat amid a rise in phone scams.
According to Google, mobile fraud has grown into a global underground industry with sophisticated tactics combined with rapidly evolving technology.
Google's report estimates that these types of scams cost consumers worldwide more than $400 billion in losses over the past year, with only a small fraction of victims ever getting their money back.
Fraudster networks are also very flexible, shifting their operations to areas where SIM cards are cheap and easy to purchase, allowing them to launch mass fraud campaigns without much hassle.
Some scams include sending fake delivery alerts, text messages claiming unpaid bills or unpaid taxes. Others are more personal, like impersonating an employer to gain trust before taking money or sex.
The scammers also use tricks to manipulate the victims' psychology, pushing them into confusing situations, urgently needing to transfer money or else they will get into trouble. They also have accomplices join the group chat to increase persuasion.
To stay safe, Google asks smartphone users to avoid accessing public WiFi unless absolutely necessary, especially when banking, shopping online, or accessing accounts with financial or personal information.
It is recommended to turn off the WiFi auto-connect setting and always check if the network is encrypted.
In addition to the habit of using public wifi, Google also recommends that users should slow down before replying to a message with ambiguous/unknown content, verify contacts through official channels, and update software and security regularly.
