Vietnam emphasized the need to further prioritize resources for the development pillar in the context of the international community's slow progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
On October 17, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, the Administrative and Budgetary Committee of the 79th General Assembly held a meeting on the United Nations' 2025 work program and budget.
According to VNA correspondent in New York, at the meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and countries affirmed the necessity of ensuring the budget for the United Nations to carry out its assigned tasks and plans, especially in the field of development.
In the context of the world facing many multidimensional challenges, the budget plan proposed by the Secretary-General for 2025 reflects the priority for reform goals to improve the effectiveness of the United Nations' operations, in line with the major orientations outlined in the document of the Future Summit, held last September.
Speaking at the discussion session, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that in the context of the international community's slow progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it is necessary to further prioritize resources for the development pillar.
Accordingly, Vietnam supports measures to ensure budget for the Development Account and the Regular Technical Cooperation Program to support developing countries; supports the Secretary-General's efforts to reposition the United Nations development system, conduct a comprehensive review to improve efficiency and find solutions to ensure operating budget for the Resident Coordinator system worldwide.
Faced with budget liquidity difficulties that have forced the United Nations to adopt measures to cut operating costs, the Vietnamese representative called on member countries to fully fulfill their obligations to contribute to the organization's annual budget.
For its part, although its contribution obligations may increase significantly in the coming time due to national income growth continuously higher than the world average, Vietnam commits to making efforts to pay its annual contributions fully and on time, demonstrating the spirit of a responsible member of the United Nations and the international community./.
