Vietnam has just been announced by the famous American travel magazine Travel + Leisure as one of the eight livable countries with affordable costs for retired travelers.
According to experts from this magazine, for many people, retirement means having more time to pursue their hobbies and passions. In particular, this magazine noted that one of the returning trends is that many senior travelers expressed their views on moving to another country after retirement. Whether the purpose of the trip is for adventure, a change of environment, or simply to reduce the cost of living, this is a potential group of travelers.
From the Americas to Europe to Asia, retirees are looking for places with large expat communities and affordable living standards. In particular, factors such as weather, location, access to healthcare, language, visa and financial requirements will play a part in deciding where they choose to live in retirement.
Travel+Leisure analyzed data from Numbeo (a database specializing in statistics on the cost of living index in cities and countries around the world through surveys) updated as of May 2024, to compare the cost of living and come up with a list of 8 livable countries with suitable costs for retirees.

Accordingly, located in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has a very affordable cost of living, especially for retirees who love adventure, exploration, and appreciate the beaches, landscapes, cuisine, history, and culture of the S-shaped country.
The overall cost of living in Vietnam is about 59.3% lower than in the US, and rents are about 78.5% lower depending on location. Notably, in Ho Chi Minh City, home to the largest expat community, the cost of living is about 69.9% lower than in New York, and housing costs are about 87.4% lower.
Not only is the long-term visa application process for foreigners not overly complicated, high-quality healthcare in Vietnam is also affordable across both the public and private systems. Most expats have international health insurance and make use of private hospitals.
Previously, on May 16, Travel + Leisure magazine also recommended Nha Trang as one of eight great beach resort destinations to enjoy retirement, with beautiful scenery, mild and pleasant weather./.
