MSc. Dr. Luong Chan Quang, Head of the Department of Disease Control and Prevention, Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City, said that through clinical trials at medical facilities in Vietnam, the results showed that the vaccine to prevent hand, foot and mouth disease caused by the EV71 virus is suitable for children from 2 months to under 6 years old and is more than 99% effective.
The vaccine helps the body produce high levels of antibodies just 1 month after injection. Although there was a slight decrease after 6 months, the antibody levels increased again by the 12th month, indicating that the vaccine has the ability to provide long-term protection. Post-injection reactions such as pain at the injection site or mild fever were mild and similar to those of conventional vaccines, and no serious reactions were recorded in the injection group.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health , in the first 4 months of the year, the country recorded 15,000 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, of which 93% were children from 1 to 5 years old, this is the most vulnerable age group due to incomplete immune systems. Hand, foot and mouth disease is a dangerous acute infectious disease, especially in young children. Each year, Vietnam records tens of thousands of cases, mainly concentrated in the Southern region (accounting for 60% - 80% of the total number of cases).
