The high number of votes in favor of Vietnam reflects the country's growing international position and prestige and is the result of the process of building and consolidating between Vietnam and UN members.
On November 20 (local time), at the United Nations headquarters in New York (USA), Vietnam continued to be re-elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for the 2025-2031 term with a high number of votes of 175/183.
In the Asia- Pacific region, the following countries were elected with Vietnam: Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, China, Japan and South Korea. This is the second time Vietnam has been elected as a member of UNCITRAL, following the first term (2019-2025) with many successful milestones, demonstrating the recognition and appreciation of the United Nations member countries and the international community for Vietnam's positive and constructive contributions in the process of participating in the development, harmonization and enforcement of international trade law in general and within the framework of UNCITRAL in recent times.
The high number of votes of support from countries for Vietnam also reflects the country's increasing international position and prestige and is the result of the process of fostering and consolidating friendly and cooperative relations between Vietnam and United Nations member countries over the past years.
As a member of UNCITRAL, in the next 5 years, Vietnam will continue to directly participate in the negotiation process and shape the rules of international trade law right from the beginning, such as building model laws, guidelines, regulations on resolving trade disputes, disputes between the state and investors as well as rules regulating new trade methods... ensuring that these rules are consistent with Vietnam's priorities and interests and in harmony with the common interests of the international community, especially developing countries.
As an open economy with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 430 billion USD (ranked 35th in the world), an import-export turnover of 681 billion USD, among the top 20 countries in terms of trade scale in the world and a system of free trade agreements with more than 60 countries, including many large economies, Vietnam attaches great importance to and actively participates in UNCITRAL, thereby promoting the building of a legal framework and shaping policies towards an open, fair and transparent trade system.
UNCITRAL is the United Nations specialized agency on international trade law established in 1966. This agency plays a leading role in promoting the harmonization and unification of international trade law.
Since its establishment, UNCITRAL has developed many important international conventions in the field of international trade such as the 1958 New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, the 1980 Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods, Model Laws, regulations and guidelines on international commercial arbitration, e-commerce, small and medium enterprises, public-private partnerships, bankruptcy and many other areas of international commercial law./.
