On May 20, Vietnam, as Chair of the Asia- Pacific Group at the United Nations in Vienna, coordinated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to successfully organize a workshop within the framework of the 34th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ 34), with the theme "Mechanism for assessing the implementation of the Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC): Lessons and experiences from countries in the Asia-Pacific region".

The workshop was organized to share good practices, experiences and lessons learned from the implementation of the UNTOC Convention Review Mechanism in countries in the Asia- Pacific region, thereby promoting cooperation and enhancing national capacity in preventing and combating transnational organized crime. The workshop attracted many countries from other regions to attend.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, emphasized the pioneering role of the Asia-Pacific region in implementing the UNTOC Review Mechanism, and affirmed the importance of multilateral cooperation in the implementation of the convention.

At the workshop, speakers from Japan, Vietnam, Singapore and Pakistan shared their practical experiences as assessed and/or assessing countries, as well as how to effectively apply the mechanism in their respective country-specific contexts.

In particular, Vietnam was honored to have experts from the Ministry of Public Security - the focal agency, playing the role of chairing and coordinating with relevant Vietnamese agencies in implementing the UNTOC Convention - invited to present Vietnam's practical experience along with the difficulties and challenges in the process of implementing the UNTOC Convention Assessment Mechanism.

Through the implementation of the Evaluation Mechanism, Vietnam has always demonstrated the image of an active member state of the United Nations in general and the UNTOC Convention in particular by fully fulfilling its obligations and effectively cooperating with countries in the evaluation process.

The assessment mechanism, established in 2018 and officially implemented since 2020, has become an essential tool to support member states in strengthening their legal and institutional frameworks to effectively prevent and combat transnational organized crime.

The Asia-Pacific region, with its rich diversity of legal systems, governance structures and levels of development, has demonstrated remarkable commitment to this process, with a larger proportion of countries participating in the assessment process than other regions.

The joint organization and participation in the Workshop reaffirms Vietnam's strong commitment to promoting regional and global cooperation in preventing and combating transnational organized crime, while contributing to spreading good practices to other regions.
