A study by scientists at the University of North Carolina (USA) was conducted on a group of people aged 65 - 80 who had been diagnosed with cognitive impairment. After an initial test to determine the status of cognitive function, participants were divided into two groups: those who ate blueberries every day and those who did not.

After six months, cognitive health tests showed that those who ate blueberries every day had significantly improved brain processing speeds after the study. Many showed processing speeds similar to the group without cognitive impairment.
Processing speed is the brain's ability to store and then recall information. The researchers don't think processing speed is the key to all brain functions. But the improvements seen are still considered "a quantum leap in brain health," according to the Daily Mail.
“Research shows that phytochemicals unique to blueberries are beneficial for brain health. Phytochemicals are compounds in plants that develop to protect plants from environmental stress, fungi, bacteria and viruses. Once consumed by humans, they pass these health benefits to us,” said Dr. Mary Ann Lila in a statement from the University of North Carolina.
“If you can’t find blueberries, you can also use any blue fruit, purple grapes or raspberries to boost cognitive health,” suggested Dr. Carol Cheatham, of the University of North Carolina, who led the research team, according to the Daily Mail.
