Fortune magazine on June 18 announced the Fortune SEA 500 list - statistics of the largest enterprises in Southeast Asia. Vietnam has 70 enterprises on this list. In the top 50, there are many familiar names such as Agribank , BIDV, Vingroup, Vietinbank,... However, the Vietnamese enterprise with the highest position on the list is the Vietnam National Petroleum Group - Petrolimex (PLX). Petrolimex ranked 23rd overall and is the leading Vietnamese enterprise on the Fortune SEA 500 list, despite its capitalization being much smaller than banks and many corporations of Vietnamese USD billionaires. Agribank ranked 37th, BIDV ranked 39th, Vingroup ranked 45th and Vietinbank ranked 48th. As of June 18, Petrolimex's capitalization on the Vietnamese stock market was only about VND52 trillion (USD2 billion), compared to VND161 trillion of Vingroup (VIC), VND265 trillion of BIDV Bank (BID), VND188 trillion of Hoa Phat Group (HPG), or VND115 trillion of Masan Group (MSN)... Petrolimex also has modest profits, only about USD120 million in 2023, compared to banks and corporations like Hoa Phat. However, Petrolimex has an impressive revenue of USD11.5 billion in 2023, far exceeding the nearly USD6.8 billion of Vingroup and the USD4.7 billion of Hoa Phat.

Indonesia (population 280 million) has the most companies in the Fortune 500 SEA list, with 110. Thailand (population 70 million) has 107. Singapore (population 5.6 million) has 84. In 2023, companies in the Fortune 500 Southeast Asia list generated $1.79 trillion in revenue, down 2.5% from the previous year. Total profits fell 9.6% to $130 billion. Most large companies in Southeast Asia have struggled recently, affected by geopolitical conflicts, supply chain shocks, and instability in markets like China and Europe. Rising prices have increased production costs. Meanwhile, global consumer demand has been weak, especially in China and Europe. The United States and Europe face high inflation.
