The Prime Minister issued Decision No. 768/QD-TTg dated April 15, 2025 approving the adjustment of the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 (Power Plan VIII). The overall goal of the plan is to firmly ensure national energy security, meet the requirements of socio-economic development and industrialization and modernization of the country. Successfully implement a fair energy transition associated with production modernization, build a smart grid, and manage advanced power systems, in line with the world's green transformation, emission reduction, and science and technology development trends. Form a comprehensive energy industry ecosystem based on renewable energy and new energy.
Specifically, the planning aims to ensure sufficient electricity supply for domestic demand, with an average GDP growth rate of about 10.0%/year in the 2026-2030 period and about 7.5%/year in the 2031-2050 period. Commercial electricity will reach about 500.4 - 557.8 billion kWh in 2030 and is expected to reach about 1,237.7 - 1,375.1 billion kWh in 2050. Electricity production and import will reach about 560.4 - 624.6 billion kWh in 2030 and about 1,360.1 - 1,511.1 billion kWh in 2050. Maximum capacity in 2030 will be about 89,655 - 99,934 MW and increase to about 205,732 - 228,570 MW in 2050. By 2030, 50% of office buildings and 50% of houses will use self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power to serve on-site consumption needs without selling electricity to the national power system...
Speaking at the conference, Comrade Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Industry and Trade, emphasized that the adjustment of the VIII Power Plan is of great significance in meeting the requirements of socio-economic development and ensuring national energy security. Ministries and branches coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to study, review, amend and supplement relevant legal regulations. Inform and disseminate the contents of the adjustment of the VIII Power Plan to create social consensus; ensure the set goals. Provinces and cities review and update power grid sources to ensure compliance with the content of the increased capacity scale in the VIII Power Plan and the adjusted VIII Power Plan.../.
