In early May, a wave of outrage arose on social media when many users discovered that some stores on the Amazon e-commerce platform in Japan were selling doormats, toilet seats, etc. printed with the image of the Vietnamese national flag. While the national flag is a sacred symbol of the Vietnamese people, the image and pride of the nation and people. Therefore, this behavior was considered an insult to the Vietnamese national flag.

Immediately after the information spread, the Vietnamese online community unanimously called for a boycott of this e-commerce platform. They rated 1 star and reported the violating stores to request the platform to remove the products.

Regarding this, speaking with a reporter from the Lao Dong Newspaper , a representative of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) said that at the time of inspection on May 13, the website interface was an e-commerce trading floor in Japan, because it had a Japanese domain name ".jp", and the language displayed was Japanese.

According to the provisions of Decree No. 52/2013/ND-CP dated May 16, 2013 of the Government on e-commerce (amended and supplemented by Decree No. 85/2021/ND-CP), this international e-commerce trading floor is not subject to the scope of Vietnamese e-commerce law. Therefore, information showing signs of violating Vietnamese law on foreign e-commerce trading floors is also not subject to the scope of Vietnamese law.

The online community is calling for a boycott of Amazon for selling doormats... printed with the image of the Vietnamese national flag.

"The Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy coordinates with the police agency to provide information and propose implementing technical measures to protect national security according to the provisions of the law on cyber security when necessary," said this representative.

As of now, some of the products that have caused outrage are still available on Amazon Japan’s website. Notably, the platform has yet to issue any official response, causing the wave of outrage among Vietnamese users to increase.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Tin (living in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) frankly said: "It is unacceptable that the national flag - the sacred symbol of the nation - is printed on disrespectful items such as doormats. Amazon needs to take clear action and take responsibility, it cannot remain silent!".

Amazon had previously apologized to the Indian government for allowing a doormat with the Indian flag printed on it to be sold on its website. The platform has since removed the item from its website.

The move comes after India announced that it would not issue Indian visas to any Amazon employees and would revoke previously issued visas.
