Since 1959, President Ho Chi Minh's first visit to the capital Baku laid the foundation for the strong friendship between Vietnam and Azerbaijan. In 1983, Azerbaijani politician Heydar Aliyev, then a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union (ie Deputy Prime Minister of the Soviet Union), paid an official visit to Vietnam. After this visit, thousands of Azerbaijani experts were sent to Vietnam to help rebuild the country's infrastructure after the war and more than 5,000 Vietnamese students were sent to study and work in Azerbaijan. When Azerbaijan separated from the Soviet Union to become an independent country, President Heydar Aliyev - who is considered the great leader of Azerbaijan - always cared about and supported Vietnam and valued nurturing the relationship between the two countries. |
