“For the 2025 Asian Individual Championship, the coaching staff of the Vietnamese chess team selected suitable players to register for the competition. We really hope that each person will have good results on their board,” said Nguyen Minh Thang, head of the chess department (Vietnam Sports Administration) and Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Chess Federation.

The Vietnamese chess team registered 4 players to compete, including grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Luong Phuong Hanh and Dau Khuong Duy. On the organizer's registration board, grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son is the 6th highest elo player (2632) out of 150 players participating in the men's event, while Pham Le Thao Nguyen has the 5th highest elo (2388) out of 105 participating female players.

The goal of the Vietnamese chess team is that the 4 players must try their best to find the opportunity to achieve the best results on their board. In terms of expertise, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son is a player who is predicted to have enough chances to succeed. The grandmaster from Kien Giang has been competing in top-level chess for many years with a lot of experience in the international arena. In all situations, Truong Son always maintains composure to achieve results in the deciding game. Through the times Vietnamese chess has participated in the Asian individual championship, we have only won the number 1 position in the men's category once. The result belongs to grandmaster Le Quang Liem (competing in 2019). This year, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and his promising junior, Dau Khuong Duy, are in the UAE and they are ready to compete.

On the professional level, Indian and Chinese chess teams are the two teams that always achieve the highest results when competing in the Asian individual championship. Vietnamese chess has made efforts in many times participating but we have not achieved many victories. According to statistics from the Asian Chess Federation, the Vietnamese chess team has won the number 1 position in the individual events 3 times in some of the above competitions (Le Quang Liem in 2019, Hoang Thanh Trang in 2000, Vo Thi Kim Phung in 2017).

This year, the Vietnamese chess team sent two young faces, Dau Khuong Duy and Luong Phuong Hanh, to compete in the Asian Individual Championship, creating more opportunities for them to accumulate and mature. Each of them has made their mark on the international arena at the youth level. However, to compete with experienced players, Khuong Duy and Phuong Hanh are being further trained in their expertise. Meanwhile, Truong Son and Thao Nguyen are confident in this year's competition in the UAE.

According to the FIDE world rankings announced in May 2025, Vietnamese chess is ranked 37th in the world and in the top 10 in Asia for men. For women, Vietnamese chess is ranked 25th in the world and also in the top 10 in Asia. At the 2025 Asian tournament, players will compete in 9 standard Swiss-system games for men and women. In addition, participating players will compete in blitz chess to compete for more achievements. The 4 Vietnamese players have been well prepared and the results of the athletes at the 2025 Asian Individual Championship will be awarded a place to the 2025 World Cup by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), so everyone is looking for opportunities for themselves.

The 2025 Asian Chess Championship will take place from May 6 to 16.
