Wushu Vietnam: Confidently heading towards the international arena

The Vietnamese wushu team has successfully completed its mission at the 2025 World Wushu Sanshou Cup, which just ended in China, with the second place overall. This is an encouraging result for Vietnamese wushu and is the basis for the sport's managers to confidently aim for the dual goals at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33) later this year in Thailand and the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20) in 2026.

Expectations for Sanshou Fighters

The 2025 World Wushu Sanshou Cup (combat) took place from April 5 to April 10 in Jiangsu Province (China). The Vietnamese wushu team participated with 6 martial artists, excellently reaching the finals of all 6 events and winning 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals, ranking second overall after the host China. Accordingly, the 4 gold medals of the Vietnamese wushu team belonged to martial artists including: Nguyen Thi Lan (48kg women), Ngo Thi Phuong Nga (52kg women), Dinh Van Tam (52kg men) and Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (60kg women). In addition, the Vietnamese wushu team also won 2 silver medals by martial artists Huynh Do Dat (70kg men) and Nguyen Manh Cuong (60kg men).

According to Head of the Wushu Department of the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center (Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports), and coach of the national Wushu team Phan Quoc Vinh, the achievements of the Vietnamese Wushu team at the recent World Cup were truly encouraging. Winning a Gold Medal in the tournament was very difficult when the level of athletes from many countries had clearly and strongly improved. The athletes of the Vietnamese team competed with great effort to achieve the best results. Notably, among the 6 athletes participating in this tournament, Hanoi Wushu had 3 martial artists, contributing 1 Gold Medal by Nguyen Thi Lan and 2 Silver Medals by Nguyen Manh Cuong and Ngo Thi Phuong Nga.

Head of the wushu department of the Vietnam Sports Administration (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ) Vu Van Trung said that the achievements of the Vietnamese wushu team at the recent World Wushu Sanshou Cup were the result of great efforts from the entire team. The young Vietnamese martial artists all showed great determination to compete and completed their tasks excellently.

Aiming for a further goal

According to Vu Van Trung, Head of the Wushu Department of the Vietnam Sports Administration (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), Wushu is also a sport in the official competition system of the SEA Games and ASIAD. Therefore, to achieve and maintain stable results in the continental arena, Vietnamese Wushu needs to prepare carefully and invest more deeply. Currently, many countries in the world (especially teams in the Asian region) are investing heavily in Wushu, thereby having many athletes reaching world-class level. In addition, at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games, many of Vietnam's strong wushu events are not included in the competition program, leading to more difficult medal competition.

National Wushu Team Coach Phan Quoc Vinh said that in preparation for international tournaments, since the beginning of 2025, the Vietnamese Wushu team with 38 athletes has focused on training in combat and performance events, including many young athletes. With the current force as well as while waiting for the performance event to have a worthy successor to the previous generation, Vietnamese Wushu will have to rely heavily on the generation of athletes in the Sanshou event to win gold medals in important competitions such as the SEA Games and ASIAD.

According to coach Phan Quoc Vinh, if there is no focus on investing in young athletes right now, it will be very difficult for them to mature and compete well at the 33rd SEA Games (2025) or the 20th ASIAD (2026). Even in Hanoi, there needs to be a continuous generation of good athletes to ensure succession. Although the wushu training movement in Hanoi is currently very developed and at a higher level than the national average, more tournaments are still needed. Through that, many talents can be selected for the Hanoi wushu team as well as the national team levels. "We are also proposing to send athletes for long-term training in China to accumulate experience and prepare for future tasks," coach Phan Quoc Vinh added.

Meanwhile, Vu Van Trung, Head of the Wushu Department of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department, said that he will consult with the leaders of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department to coordinate with localities to create more wushu playgrounds, thereby helping athletes compete and discovering more young talents for national team levels.

Hopefully, with the synchronous implementation of solutions and the joint efforts of managers and experts, young Vietnamese wushu athletes will make their mark on the international and regional arenas in the coming time, first of all at the 33rd SEA Games held in Thailand.
