Mr. Nguyen Thai Tuyen's family (Lac Vinh village, Ky Lac commune) was once classified as a near-poor household in the commune because they had no stable job, their income only depended on small-scale livestock farming, forestry, seasonal work...

A big turning point came to Mr. Tuyen's family in 2020 when the Ha Tinh Department of Science and Technology deployed a honey beekeeping model under the sustainable poverty reduction program in Ky Lac commune. Mr. Tuyen was one of the households selected to participate in the model and was transferred 10 boxes of bee seeds.

From the initial 10 colonies, Mr. Tuyen (far left) has now multiplied to more than 50 bee colonies and is regularly harvesting honey.

Not only being supported with items such as beekeeping boxes, protective gear, honey extraction machines... Mr. Tuyen was also fully trained in bee colony care techniques, disease prevention, honey extraction and preservation processes and product consumption directions.

Lacking experience and technical expertise, Mr. Tuyen encountered many difficulties in the early days of taking care of 10 breeding bee colonies. The bee colonies developed poorly, the amount of honey collected was small and the quality was not high.

“Many times I was discouraged because I followed the instructions but the results were not as expected. But thinking this was a rare opportunity to escape poverty, I was determined not to give up, I had to study and work at the same time to achieve results,” Mr. Tuyen recalled.

Thanks to his eagerness to learn, in addition to the knowledge provided in training sessions, Mr. Tuyen also spends time visiting large beekeeping households in the area to gain more experience.

With the experience accumulated over many years, Mr. Nguyen Thai Tuyen will continue to multiply more bee colonies in the coming time.

Learning from practice has helped him significantly improve his care skills, especially the method of multiplying bee colonies - a decisive factor for the sustainable development of beekeeping. Gradually, his bee colonies have grown healthily, and honey production has increased significantly. From the initial 10 colonies, Mr. Tuyen has now multiplied to more than 50 colonies and regularly harvested honey.

Up to now, Mr. Nguyen Thai Tuyen has become a skilled beekeeper, can understand quite thoroughly about beekeeping techniques. According to him, during the flowering season - from about March onwards, if the weather is favorable, he can harvest honey once every 10 days.

On average, each bee colony produces one liter of honey, and when the flower source is abundant, each colony can produce up to 1.5 - 2 liters. With more than 50 bee colonies in season, the annual honey yield reaches at least 700 kg. Thanks to that, the income from honey brings his family nearly 100 million VND per year - a figure he never dared to think of before.

Not stopping at collecting honey, Mr. Tuyen also proactively developed a new direction of multiplying bee colonies and supplying bee breeds. Thanks to mastering the technique of multiplying bee colonies, each year his family provides hundreds of bee breed colonies to people in and outside the region, bringing in tens of millions of dong. These two sources of income have helped his family's economy to be stable and increasingly prosperous.

Mr. Nguyen Thai Tuyen shares his beekeeping experience with everyone.

Not only helping individual households, Mr. Tuyen also became the one who inspired the beekeeping movement in Ky Lac commune. He regularly consulted and shared his experiences with anyone who wanted to learn. Since then, many households in the commune have boldly invested in beekeeping after seeing Mr. Tuyen's model bring practical results.

Mr. Le Van Dinh - a villager who received technical support from Mr. Tuyen shared: "When I first started raising bees, I knew nothing. Mr. Tuyen enthusiastically showed me how to take care of the bees, recognize diseases and treat weak bees... Thanks to that, I have now had 30 bee colonies and have a significant income."

Ky Lac honey has affirmed its brand in the market inside and outside the province.

Mr. Tran Van Nghia - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ky Lac commune assessed: "Mr. Tuyen's family's beekeeping model is a typical success in developing the commune's livelihood support source. Not only has he risen out of poverty sustainably, he has also contributed to expanding the beekeeping profession, creating livelihoods for local people. The effectiveness of this model has positively contributed to improving income criteria in the commune's new rural construction."

From a poor farmer, Mr. Nguyen Thai Tuyen has turned opportunity into motivation, turned difficulty into success and become a shining example of the will to overcome difficulties of Ky Lac farmers.

Mr. Tuyen's beekeeping story shows that, with the right support from poverty reduction programs and the people's spirit of striving to improve, new production models can completely become sustainable livelihoods, making an important contribution to the fight against hunger and poverty in localities.
