In January 2024, the country's export turnover of goods reached 33.6 billion USD, an increase of 42% over the same period last year, equivalent to an increase of 9.92 billion USD.

According to a report from the General Department of Customs, in January 2024, trade activities were bustling, helping the total import-export turnover of the whole country to reach an estimated 64.2 billion USD, an increase of 37.7% (equivalent to an increase of 17.58 billion USD) over the same period last year. The trade balance in January was estimated to have a trade surplus of 2.92 billion USD. Of which, the country's goods exports were estimated to reach nearly 33.6 billion USD, an increase of 42% over the same period last year, an increase of 9.92 billion USD.

The two main groups of agricultural, forestry and fishery products and processed industry products grew with increases of nearly 97% and 38% respectively. Exports of phones of all kinds and components in the first month of this year increased by more than 56% compared to the previous month.

The US remains Vietnam’s largest import market, with $9.6 billion, up nearly 56% over the same period. Traditional markets such as China, the EU and ASEAN also grew.

Many opportunities to break through agricultural exports

The nearly doubling of agricultural, forestry and fishery exports in the first month of the new year is a good sign for agricultural export enterprises and farmers.

A batch of green-skinned elephant mangoes from Cho Moi district, An Giang province is preparing to go to the United States and Australia, opening up a golden opportunity for the export market as partners are quite fond of this product.

"We invited our Australian partners to come all the way to Cho Moi district to select mangoes and today we decided to bring these mangoes to Australia," said Mr. Nguyen Dinh Muoi - Deputy General Director of Vina T&T Import Export Company Limited.

With a record turnover of 2.3 billion USD last year, durian is a commodity with many opportunities to increase export turnover. Currently, many factories have signed orders for the second quarter of this year.

"In Thailand, durian crops are also out of season, so durian from the West is currently in high demand. The price is very high, so we don't have enough output for export orders," said Ms. Phan Thi Thuy - Director of WesternFarm Company Limited.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association commented: "Even if the current durian production in Southeast Asia were to be tripled, it would still not satisfy the demand of the Chinese market."

Last January, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports brought in more than 5 billion USD, up 79% over the same period last year. Notably, the seafood group, after a period of decline, now has a fairly high growth rate. Diversifying products and taking advantage of opportunities from markets will help this billion-dollar industry continue to set many record numbers in the new year.
