Agricultural exports: From local advantages to global playing field

(GLO)- Promoting agricultural exports is a strategic direction to increase value, expand markets and promote sustainable agricultural development. Therefore, it is necessary to transform local agricultural advantages into real competitiveness to be able to reach far in the global supply chain.

Create a standardized manufacturing platform

Gia Lai has the potential to develop concentrated raw material areas, specializing in crops for export with about 106,400 hectares of coffee, 33,250 hectares of fruit trees, 83,750 hectares of rubber, 7,800 hectares of pepper... In addition to the potential for agricultural development, Gia Lai is also the gateway connecting the Central Highlands with the provinces of the Central and Southeast regions via National Highways 14, 19, 25. This is the basis for Gia Lai to become a trading hub, transiting goods connecting both the Northeast of Cambodia and Southern Laos.

On the other hand, in recent times, Gia Lai has focused on developing value chain production models, encouraging the construction of standard raw material areas, expanding cooperation links between farmers-cooperatives-enterprises and enhancing the application of technology in traceability and post-harvest preservation.

The whole province has nearly 256,000 hectares cultivated according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, 4C, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, FLO standards; of which about 60,000 hectares of crops (coffee, pepper, tea, vegetables, tubers, fruits, rice...) have been certified for production according to the standards.

Gia Lai has also been granted 227 growing area codes with an area of over 9,668 hectares and 38 packaging facility codes with a total packaging capacity of about 1,550-1,700 tons of fresh fruit/day, mainly exporting fruit to markets in China, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, etc.

In 2024, the export turnover will reach 820 million USD. In 2025, the province aims to export 850 million USD, of which the agricultural sector is expected to make a breakthrough. In the first 4 months of 2025, the province's export turnover is estimated at 685.7 million USD (reaching 80.67% of the plan, up 55.84% over the same period last year). Coffee alone reached an export turnover of 662 million USD (up 65.5% in value) with an output of 122,000 tons. This item currently accounts for 96.5% of the total export turnover of the whole province.

Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep - Chairman of the Board of Members and Director of Vinh Hiep Company Limited, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association - shared: "As one of the leading suppliers of green coffee beans in Vietnam with responsibility and prestige in the global coffee export supply chain, Vinh Hiep has promoted its advantages to build a sustainable coffee production network according to international market standards, with an annual output of over 150,000 tons.

Currently, the Company has expanded its export market to 58 countries around the world , of which the European market accounts for about 60%. According to Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep, a raw material area only has real export value when it meets all the following factors: organized production according to the chain, closely linked with key enterprises and logistics systems, production meeting import market standards, ensuring traceability.

In addition to the strong breakthrough of the coffee industry, many other agricultural products also received positive signals from the market when prices were high; some fresh fruits such as durian, banana, passion fruit, etc. have met the standards to enter the official market in major markets around the world. In particular, Vietnam has signed many official export protocols to China. This is a great opportunity for Gia Lai's advantageous products and also a motivation for farmers, cooperatives, and businesses to continue investing in improving product quality.

Mr. Pham Van Binh - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade - acknowledged: "In the province, there are a number of reputable export enterprises such as Vinh Hiep, Hoa Trang, Tin Thanh Dat, Louis Dreyfu Company Vietnam Trading and Processing Company Limited. Along with that, the province has attracted a number of large enterprises in the field of preliminary processing and processing to create sources of goods for exporting fruit products such as: Hung Son, Quicornac, DOVECO, Nafoods... In 2024 and the first 4 months of 2025, Gia Lai agricultural product exports recorded many bright spots.

In addition to green coffee beans, processed coffee has gradually conquered demanding markets, and specialty coffee is chosen by European roasters. Bananas and passion fruit products have expanded to the EU, Japan, Korea, China, etc. Typical agricultural products such as honey, cashews, macadamia nuts, pepper, etc. are of interest to many importers.

Reaching far with advantageous agricultural products

To date, Vietnam has signed and implemented 17 FTAs with many major partners in the world. In particular, participation in new generation FTAs such as CPTPP, EVFTA, UKVFTA has affirmed Vietnam's commitment to deep and comprehensive integration. However, technical barriers are increasingly tightened by importing countries; and competition from countries with large agricultural output in the world is becoming increasingly fierce, requiring businesses to improve product and service quality, along with finding new market segments...

Mr. Luu Quoc Thanh - General Director of Quicornac Company Limited - said: "Gia Lai has ideal climatic conditions for growing purple passion fruit. This is a prominent competitive advantage when the European and North American markets especially favor it thanks to its rich flavor and high nutritional value. Currently, about 90% of the processed passion fruit output of factories is exported to this market and there is still a lot of room for growth. With a short harvest cycle and moderate investment costs, passion fruit also brings livelihood opportunities to farmers, suitable for the model of short-term use to support long-term use".

In order to achieve the goal of improving competitiveness and expanding the consumption market for key products, the provincial Department of Industry and Trade is actively implementing many solutions to promote the export of goods, focusing on supporting the expansion of markets for agricultural products with strengths such as coffee, passion fruit, bananas; OCOP products with export potential such as honey, cashew nuts, macadamia nuts, processed medicinal herbs, etc. Support participation in business connection events, participation in international fairs of agricultural products. Support exporting enterprises to participate in cross-border online export platforms such as Amazon and Alibaba. In addition, coordinate with units under the Ministry of Industry and Trade to strengthen training and education on the application of e-commerce in export activities. Organize and participate in meetings, exchanges, and connections to consume products and goods to attract trade investment between Vietnamese enterprises, foreign enterprises, industry associations and trade agencies, Vietnamese trade counselors abroad, etc.

With a clear action plan, the Department of Industry and Trade aims to accelerate, make breakthroughs and reach out with advantageous agricultural products throughout 2025. According to the Director of the Department of Industry and Trade: Currently, agricultural products alone account for about 80% of the total export turnover of the province with many agricultural products present in nearly 60 countries around the world. The main export market is Europe with a ratio of 50-60% of the total export turnover of the province, consuming most of the coffee, wood products, processed fruits... The Asian market accounts for about 30% of total export turnover, consuming mainly rubber, cassava chips, coffee, fruits...

However, the province's export commodity structure is not yet diversified, mainly focusing on two key products: coffee and fruit trees, while the output of rubber, pepper, cashew, and cassava is very large. The province's agricultural exports still face some limitations such as: high raw export rate, lack of chain linkage, limited preliminary processing and processing capacity, and limited ability to supply deep processing orders. Many products have good quality but do not meet the requirements of standards and designs in the face of the challenge of the increasingly strict import market in terms of food safety standards and traceability. Therefore, in addition to raw exports, Gia Lai is gradually shifting to supporting the export of deeply processed products.

“During the working trips to the US and Canada in April 2024 by provincial leaders, as well as the Japanese partner program working with the Department of Industry and Trade last March, the partners highly appreciated the quality of some Gia Lai products. They also affirmed that Gia Lai products can be completely exported to these markets as high-quality finished products,” the Director of the Department of Industry and Trade added.
