Durian exports decline due to O-yellow and Cadmium

In the first four months of the year, durian exports to China decreased, reaching only 20% of the annual plan due to the country's control of O-yellow and Cadmium residues. This is one of two urgent issues raised by the commander of the Agriculture and Environment sector at the meeting.

On the morning of May 13, Minister of Agriculture and Environment Do Duc Duy chaired a conference to review work in April, deploying key tasks in May and the second quarter of 2025.

According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in April, the export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fishery products reached 5.47 billion USD, an increase of 5.4% compared to April 2024.

In the first four months, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports reached 21.15 billion USD, up nearly 11% over the same period last year.

Trade surplus reached 5.18 billion USD, although down slightly by 4% compared to the same period, but still higher than the economy 's overall trade surplus (5.02 billion USD).

In the first four months of this year, exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products all increased by 10-20% compared to the same period last year. Of which, agricultural products contributed 11.6 billion USD, forestry products 5.56 billion USD, fishery products nearly 3.1 billion USD, the rest were livestock products and production inputs.

There are 6 items in the "club" of exports over 1 billion USD and 2 items reaching over 3 billion USD: wood and wood products 5.2 billion USD, coffee 3.78 billion USD, shrimp 1.24 billion USD.

Rice and fruit and vegetable exports alone reached 1.75 billion USD and 1.62 billion USD respectively, but compared to the same period last year, these two items decreased by 14%.

The average export price of some agricultural products increased dramatically, such as coffee price of 5,698 USD/ton (up 67.5%), rubber price of 1,935 USD/ton (up 30%), pepper price of 6,893 USD/ton (up 62.5%), cashew nut price of 6,808 USD/ton (up 27%), and rice price dropped to 514 USD/ton (down 20%).

The US, China and Japan are still the three largest export markets for agricultural, forestry and fishery products of Vietnam, accounting for 20.5%, 17.1% and 7.5% respectively.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy said the Prime Minister especially appreciated the production and export results of the agricultural and environmental sectors.

According to Mr. Duy, if this growth momentum can be maintained and the tariff problems with the US are soon resolved, the export target of 65 billion USD and industry growth of about 4% this year is completely feasible.

Despite many positive results, Mr. Duy commented that we cannot be subjective, because the world situation still has many potential risks from trade competition, conflicts of interest and market fluctuations.

Regarding the domestic market, Mr. Duy emphasized two urgent issues. First, the inspection problems have caused durian exports, an item that reached 3.2 billion USD in 2024, to show signs of slowing down, currently only reaching 20% of the 2025 plan.

In addition, pests and diseases on crops and livestock are complicated. Prolonged dry weather has caused difficulties for many localities. In Bac Giang, a large lychee growing area has only had one rain during the past month, and irrigation water is scarce, affecting production.

Therefore, Mr. Duy suggested that units need to seriously evaluate the achieved results, and frankly acknowledge the shortcomings and difficulties to propose specific and practical solutions to ensure the progress of tasks in May, the second quarter and the first 6 months of the year.

"We don't have much time left. Without strong determination and practical solutions, it will be very difficult to complete the targets for the whole year and the whole term," said Mr. Duy.

Key items need urgent processing.

As reported by Tuoi Tre Online , on May 8, Minister Do Duc Duy chaired a meeting with relevant units to listen to reports on the current status of management of growing area codes, traceability of origin, and solutions to enhance durian export activities.

At this meeting, Mr. Duy directed relevant units to take a series of short-term and long-term solutions to facilitate durian exports.

" This is a key export item to a market that is also " The main force , therefore , must be very urgent and quickly complete the legal basis , regulations , standards , processes and procedures . Once called the main force , we must behave like a main force product " - Mr. Duy said at the meeting on May 8 .

Vietnam's durian exports to China have decreased sharply (even temporarily stopped) since early January when the country tightened control of yellow O and cadmium residues (from the end of 2024).

At that time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and specialized units had many solutions, but after 4 months, the situation of exporting durian to China was still difficult.

The main reason is that durian shipments still contain Cadmium residue or yellow O.

Currently, the durian growing area in Vietnam has reached nearly 170,000 hectares, with an expected harvest of about 1.5 million tons this year, concentrated from now until September.
