Specifically, NHK today, November 9, quoted an announcement from the US State Department saying that the value of foreign arms sales contracts reached 192.3 billion USD in fiscal year 2018, which ended in September. This includes a contract to sell littoral combat ships worth 6.5 billion USD to Saudi Arabia, a contract to sell FA-18 fighter jets worth 5.1 billion USD to Kuwait, and an agreement to sell Patriot air and missile defense systems to Poland ($4.6 billion).

According to US officials, the increase in arms exports is the result of the policy of loosening restrictions on arms deals introduced by the Trump administration in April. In addition, the White House has encouraged officials to play a bigger role in increasing overseas business for the US arms industry.

Reuters quoted several officials as saying that President Trump aims to further increase military equipment exports even though the country is leading the global arms trade.
