Mr. Nguyen Trong Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health, said that recently, the weather in many regions across the country has been hot and sunny, affecting people's lives and working environment.

To proactively prevent heatstroke for patients and medical staff, ensure safety and improve patient satisfaction, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management requests Directors of hospitals under the Ministry of Health, Directors of Health Departments of provinces and cities, and Heads of Health of ministries and branches to urgently implement measures to strengthen heatstroke prevention and control.

Specifically, prepare medicines, equipment, and emergency vehicles at hospitals and outpatient clinics; train and instruct on first aid skills for people with heatstroke, heat shock, and especially stroke; be ready to promptly provide emergency care to patients.

Coordinate with media units and local preventive medical facilities to propagate and mobilize people to proactively prevent heatstroke and sudden changes in environmental temperature.

Review the implementation of relevant criteria in the Hospital Quality Criteria Set 2.0, increase ventilation in areas with a large number of patients such as waiting rooms and corridors, install additional canopies on walkways between buildings and in outdoor areas with a large concentration of patients' relatives.

For treatment departments, patient rooms, administrative rooms, etc., add ceiling fans, wall fans, steam fans, and industrial fans in the corridors where necessary. Proactively mobilize resources to install air conditioners within the hospital's capacity.

Arrange and provide free drinking water for patients and their relatives in clinical departments and waiting rooms. Add water dispensers in locations where there is a shortage or when demand increases on hot days.

How to distinguish between sunstroke and heatstroke and how to prevent them

According to experts, when people work or go out in the sun for too long, under the continuous effect of harsh sunlight, the body's thermoregulatory center will be shocked, causing a disorder in thermoregulation along with the phenomenon of acute dehydration of the body. This is a condition of heatstroke.

Heatstroke often presents with severe symptoms early on, with many early neurological signs that may indicate reversible or irreversible damage. Subdural and intracerebral hematomas may occur in some cases.

Heatstroke is a condition of total dehydration accompanied by thermoregulation disorder and vasomotor disorder, which is essentially due to the body's thermoregulatory center not adapting to the surrounding weather conditions.

When the outdoor temperature is too high, along with having to expose yourself to the sun for too long or having to work in hot, high-temperature environments (mines, closed rooms...), or excessive physical activity in young people (playing high-intensity sports , doing heavy work for a long time)... will lead to the phenomenon that the amount of heat generated and the amount of heat absorbed is much greater than the amount of heat the body radiates to the surrounding environment. Therefore, in heatstroke, the main cause is total dehydration.

In the event of heatstroke, people need to quickly take first aid measures immediately without the support of medical staff or medical equipment.

Specifically, quickly reduce the victim's body temperature by immediately moving the victim to a cool, airy place, removing some of their clothes, giving them cool water mixed with salt, and applying cold compresses with a cool towel or ice to areas outside the skin such as the armpits, groin, and neck.

If the victim is unconscious and cannot drink water or vomits continuously, has a high fever, and has symptoms of abdominal pain, chest pain, and difficulty breathing, the victim must be quickly transferred to the nearest medical facility. During the transport, the victim must be regularly cooled.

Doctors recommend that people should not work too long in the sun or in hot environments and avoid strenuous physical activities. Drink enough water when it is hot or when doing heavy labor. Always wear full sun protection equipment when working outdoors such as protective clothing, hats, caps, glasses; keep the working environment cool, especially factories, mines, etc.
