Man City could face heavy penalties if found guilty. |
The saga of Man City's 115 financial allegations has lasted for more than two and a half years and is still unsolved. Meanwhile, some clubs such as Nottingham Forest or Everton have also been deducted points for financial violations.
If Man City are found guilty, the punishment could be severe: from fines, points deductions to relegation. However, football finance expert Kieran Maguire said that accusing Man City is not simple.
The three main allegations include: falsely reporting sponsorship revenue, failing to cooperate with the investigation, and paying “off the books” salaries to coaches and players. Of these, the financial fraud allegation is considered extremely difficult to prove without specific evidence from sponsors or auditors.
“The question is: where is the evidence? With such serious allegations, if they are not proven, it becomes a joke,” said Kieran Maguire.
A 14-week hearing concluded in late 2024, with more than half a million documents submitted. Yet six months on, a final decision has yet to be made, prompting many, including Gary Neville, to say: “What a disgrace.”
