14 high schools have fewer students registered than the quota: What are the chances of passing?

Compared to 2024, the number of schools with a competition ratio of less than 1 in the public 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi increased by 4 schools. 2 schools in this group are located in the inner city district: Phuc Loi High School - Long Bien and Thuong Cat High School - Bac Tu Liem.

At the bottom of the competition ratio in the entire city is Tho Xuan - Dan Phuong High School, with 1/0.64. The school was granted 540 quotas by the city, but only 348 students registered for their first choice.

Similarly, Dai Cuong High School - Ung Hoa, the quota is 450, the first choice has 294 students registered, the competition ratio is 1/0.65.

The remaining schools in the competition ratio group below 1 are Minh Quang, Tu Lap, Bac Luong Son, Xuan Khanh, Bat Bat, Ung Hoa B, Luu Hoang, Dong My, Ung Hoa A, Thuong Cat and Nguyen Trai - Thuong Tin.

Although a competition ratio of less than 1 will increase the chance of admission for students applying for their first choice to the school, the chance of passing is not 100%. Because the admission principle is to consider all choices in parallel and equally.

In the 2024 10th grade admission season, a leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training clearly explained: "There is no way that candidates can be sure to pass when registering their first choice at a school with a competition ratio of less than 1.

For example, a school has 350 quotas, the admission score is 20, there are 100 students with the first choice getting 20 points, 100 students with the second choice getting 21 points, 150 students with the third choice getting 22 points.

Students will be considered in parallel until all students meet the conditions according to the standard score, not having to prioritize the first choice before considering the second and third choices.

This can also be seen in last year's admissions, when Doan Ket High School and Bat Bat High School both had a competition ratio of less than 1, but one school increased by 8 points, the other school decreased by 16 points.

The reason lies in the total number of wishes.

Doan Ket School has 554 first-choice candidates, 121 less than the target. The number of second and third choices is also not much, 389 and 21 NV3 respectively. The total number of candidates with choices is 964.

Meanwhile, Bat Bat school has 425 first-choice applications, but second-choice applications have up to 1,397 applications and third-choice applications have 1,760. The total number of candidates with first-choice applications is 3,582.

Based on the total number of candidates who have applied, it is estimated that schools such as Tu Lap, Minh Quang, Bac Luong Son, and Luu Hoang will find it difficult to reduce their admission scores in the 2025 entrance exam. The total number of applications to these schools is very large, at 5,000-8,500, 10-15 times the target.
