This afternoon (December 23), two A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft and a C-130J transport aircraft from the US took off from Gia Lam airport ( Hanoi ).
At 4:00 p.m., the first A-10 attack aircraft rolled onto the runway to prepare for takeoff.
Many officers, soldiers, people and guests remaining at the Defense Exhibition lingered in the exhibition area to watch.
Introduced in 1972, the A-10, nicknamed Thunderbolt II, is a twin-engine subsonic attack aircraft designed to provide close air support for ground forces.
Just minutes later, a second A-10 also rolled onto the runway.
The A-10 is a single-seat attack aircraft, with a cockpit equipped with 12.7mm to 38.1mm thick titanium armor and a total weight of up to 408kg. The A-10 has good maneuverability when flying slowly and low because of its straight and large wings. Because it does not need to fly fast, the A-10 is equipped with a turbofan engine, two engines mounted on the back creating the characteristic shape of the A-10.
The second A-10 aircraft flew over Long Bien district, heading out of the city to the southwest.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II is often referred to as the "Boar" because it sometimes appears with teeth painted on its nose - perhaps most famously the GAU-8 Avenger - an impressive 30mm multiple-barrel cannon protruding from the aircraft's nose can fire 3,900 rounds per minute, making a very loud noise.
At 4:25 p.m., from the exhibition area, the C-130J transport aircraft turned toward the runway to prepare for takeoff.
The C-130J transport aircraft is 29.8m long, has a wingspan of 40.4m, is 11.6m high, has an empty weight of 34 tons, a maximum take-off weight of 70 tons, and a cargo capacity of 20 tons. The cargo compartment is 16m long, 3m wide, and 2.7m high.
Notably, in the flight crew of the C-130J medium transport aircraft there is a female pilot.
After about two minutes of moving on the runway, the C-130J gained momentum and took off.
At 4:30 p.m., the C-130J took off from Gia Lam airport, completing its 5-day display mission at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024.
