20 days before graduation exam, candidates are "shocked" because the school does not recruit block C00

(Dan Tri) - All night on June 4, Nguyen Mai Anh cried because of the news that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities stopped considering block C00 in 17 majors. Mai Anh was among many candidates who failed their first choice even though they had not yet taken the graduation exam.

Nguyen Mai Anh (born 2007, Hai Duong) is good at social subjects. Since grade 10, the female student has oriented her future career to journalism. Therefore, Mai Anh focuses on studying 3 subjects: literature, history and geography, with the hope of passing the entrance exam to the Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

In grade 11, Mai Anh won third prize for excellent history students at the cluster level. In grade 12, when registering for the graduation exam, Mai Anh did not waste time thinking, registering for 2 elective subjects: history and geography, planning to apply for university admission with the C00 group, the group in which she has the most advantage.

“All my dreams came crashing down yesterday morning. Hanoi has two leading journalism training institutions, but neither of them recruits students from the C00 group. If the University of Humanities had announced earlier like the Academy of Journalism and Communication, we students would have been prepared to change our study direction.

I chose to take the C00 exam because my goal was very clear, to determine my major and school early, but at the last minute, when there were only 20 days left until the graduation exam, the school stopped considering admission to the C00 exam not only in 1 major but in 17 majors, all of which were social sciences.

"I feel like I was thrown off the boat in the middle of the river and not far from the shore," Mai Anh said, choking up.

On the social networking site of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, hundreds of comments from candidates expressed their indignation when the school announced the admission combination at the last minute, when all candidates were preparing for the graduation exam and had no chance to "turn back".

“School, this year the new program for the C block exam is also very difficult, but there are only 3 weeks left before the school releases a proposal and removes most of the C00s in many majors, so how can we “turn around” to review?

When reading the school's name, people immediately think of social sciences, but journalism or public relations are now considered independently in block D. Is that unfair to us who have been studying for a long time and can no longer change exam subjects?

Studying C00 is partly because of the school, wanting to get into USSH (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) to study C00 but the school's project was like a shock before the graduation exam", wrote Linh Chi.

“The school just announced the admission plan right before the exam, and it was late, but they also dropped the C00 group. The school can drop it, but please notify us early so we can change the group. If we drop it now, where will the students who chose the C00 group go? I hope the school will consider and reconsider, because now we don't have a chance to change anymore,” wrote Yen Nhi.

“We studied all year to get into the school. C00 is the core combination, but the school dropped it right before the exam day. Where can we go?”, another account wrote.

Nguyen Mai Anh also added: " The Ministry of Education and Training always emphasizes the element of fairness in admissions, but is it fair that schools stop considering admissions for the C00 group - the traditional group of social sciences - at a time when no candidate has enough time to review for other subjects?"

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai - a high school literature teacher in Hanoi - also expressed surprise at the news that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities stopped recruiting block C00 in 17 training majors.

This year, Ms. Mai's class has about 15 students in the main group C00.

“Some students taking the C00 exam are quite good at math, but most of them do not study deeply because they think it is just a prerequisite subject. Therefore, even those who study well and regularly find it difficult to get above 8 points in math.

Currently, only those who have taken the HSA (Hanoi National University's aptitude test) are the most secure. Those who are only admitted to university based on their high school graduation exam scores are among the most disadvantaged.

Students clearly identified their admission combination as literature - history - geography and focused on only one admission method. With this last-minute change, students cannot avoid feeling abandoned. I also hope that schools will reconsider to ensure fairness and humanity for all students, especially students in rural areas," Ms. Mai stated her opinion.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has 28 training majors. In 2024, only 2 majors will not recruit group C00: Southeast Asian Studies and Japanese Studies. However, this year, the school will no longer recruit group C00 in 17 majors, bringing the total number of majors that do not recruit the literature - history - geography combination to 19.

9 majors still recruiting block C00 include: Political Science, Han Nom, History, Archival Studies, Linguistics, Anthropology, Religious Studies, Philosophy and Literature.

In addition to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, a series of other universities do not consider admission to block C00 even though they train in social sciences, such as Hanoi Open University, University of Law - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Academy of Journalism and Communication, and Capital University.
