40% of type 2 diabetics have chronic kidney disease

The rate of people with diabetes, heart failure and kidney disease is increasing. To promptly detect and prevent complications, community screening programs are being promoted.

Specialist Doctor 2 Tran Thi Thuy Dung (Department of Endocrinology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City) said that cardiovascular, metabolic and kidney diseases often occur at the same time due to their close relationship.

"Specifically, about 40% of type 2 diabetes patients have chronic kidney disease, 1/3 have cardiovascular disease. In contrast, 20% of heart failure patients have type 2 diabetes, 30-40% have chronic kidney disease, and 20-40% have both diseases at the same time," Dr. Dung shared the information at the department conference on June 4.

According to Dr. Dung, diabetes treatment does not stop at controlling blood sugar but requires a comprehensive assessment of accompanying factors such as cardiovascular disease, heart failure or chronic kidney disease. Early screening for chronic kidney disease is very important, not only based on glomerular filtration rate but also requires proteinuria testing - an indicator of early kidney damage. Timely detection and intervention help prevent complications from progressing.

Screening helps detect chronic kidney disease early

Ms. Nguyen Do Quyen, Executive Director of FPT Long Chau Pharmacy and Vaccination System, said that kidney disease is one of the groups of diseases that are prescribed a lot at the pharmacy, reflecting the increasing need for intervention and prevention.

In order to increase early detection of chronic kidney disease in the community, especially in high-risk groups, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical Company (Germany) has cooperated with FPT Long Chau Pharmacy System to implement free screening programs in many localities nationwide. It is expected that this year, about 30 screening programs will be implemented.

Boehringer Ingelheim Vietnam representative, Mr. Oliver Koehncke, said that the program has the cooperation of FPT Long Chau Pharmacy System and local medical centers in using the rapid proteinuria test device. This is a tool to help detect early proteinuria, a warning sign of potential kidney disease.

Positive cases will be consulted and guided to perform specialized tests to comprehensively assess kidney function, creating opportunities for early treatment and proactively preventing serious complications.

As planned, the program will be implemented in coordination at Long Chau pharmacies and local medical centers, helping people have the opportunity to screen for kidney disease for free and access early prevention methods.
