In these last days of historic April, the whole country and all Vietnamese people are eagerly looking forward to the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) with a series of exciting and heroic events and activities taking place in Ho Chi Minh City, the city that is honored and proud to be named after beloved Uncle Ho.

Among the series of events worth waiting for, there is the Foreign Correspondent Press Week, taking place from April 25 to May 1, attracting about 180 international reporters. Journalist Khieu Kola - Advisor to the President of the Cambodian Journalists Club (CCJ), Senior Editor of CNC TV channel under Royal Group - is the only Cambodian reporter to attend the press week within the framework of the event, at the invitation of the Organizing Committee.

In an interview with a VNA reporter in Phnom Penh before leaving for Vietnam, veteran journalist Khieu Kola expressed his feelings before returning to Ho Chi Minh City to attend the event celebrating the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day for the second time, at the invitation of the Vietnamese Embassy in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

For Mr. Khieu Kola, it was a great honor to attend a historic event of 100 million heroic Vietnamese people, who worked together and fought for national liberation under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam founded by President Ho Chi Minh more than 90 years ago.

Not only that, he expressed his joy that the unification of Vietnam also had the contribution of the late Supreme King Samdech Norodom Sihanouk and the Cambodian people, who supported and assisted the two regions of North and South Vietnam to reunite.

Thirty years ago, young reporter Khieu Kola attended the event celebrating the Liberation Day of the South and the reunification of Vietnam, where he met many international reporters and Mr. Nguyen Minh Triet, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee at that time. Now, 30 years later, in the last days of historic April, on this trip back to Ho Chi Minh City, the veteran Cambodian journalist hopes to have the opportunity to meet the leaders of the city with the most vibrant economic growth in Southeast Asia, to raise questions about what he has witnessed in recent years, such as why is Ho Chi Minh City's economy growing so rapidly?

Having a hobby of watching Vietnamese documentaries, the Cambodian journalist believes that those films clearly reflect the historical truth about the struggle of the Vietnamese people under the leadership of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, chaired by Mr. Nguyen Huu Tho.

According to a reporter who used to work for the National News Agency of Cambodia (formerly SPK, now AKP), Ho Chi Minh City was named after President Ho Chi Minh after April 30, 1975, and was previously called Saigon. Journalist Khieu Kola still clearly remembers that after the Liberation of the South, Mr. Nguyen Van Linh became Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, and later became General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

He said that the first Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee played an important role in helping Saigon, once under the control of mercenaries during the Republic of Vietnam, become a neat, orderly, safe and constantly developing city until today, becoming the "economic locomotive" of Vietnam, helping the country's economy grow at a high rate, with a high per capita income, among the leading groups in the region.

In the early 1980s, while attending a Vietnamese language course offered by SPK in Phnom Penh, Mr. Khieu Kola learned about the heroism of the Vietnamese people. In particular, since he was a child, around 10-11 years old, he had heard the name of President Ho Chi Minh, wondering why he, from an ocean-going ship worker who traveled through many countries, could become the President leading the country of Vietnam, with the famous statement "nothing is more precious than independence and freedom."

From then on, he continued to learn and enjoy listening to the Declaration of Independence and the letters, articles and speeches of President Ho Chi Minh. He loved and remembered very well the saying "On the day of victory, our people will rebuild our country to be more dignified and beautiful" by President Ho Chi Minh.

During this business trip to Vietnam, the veteran Cambodian reporter hopes to visit the metro line in Ho Chi Minh City, to compare it with the metro lines he has experienced in Singapore, Thailand... According to him, in addition to the metro, Vietnam is transforming with many other large-scale infrastructure projects such as airports, highways, high-speed railways...

Journalist Khieu Kola said that in recent times, Vietnam’s economy has developed rapidly and dramatically, as capable leaders and party members have been promoted to important positions, helping the country develop. He stated: “Vietnam has chosen the right path.”

From that perspective, the senior editor of CNC Television commented that the content of the speech at the upcoming event in Ho Chi Minh City by the Vietnamese leader will introduce to the world Vietnam's aspiration for peace and development. That is the aspiration for economic development, as well as the desire to contribute to maintaining peace in the region and the world.

In particular, Vietnam has recently made positive contributions in sending military forces to participate in earthquake rescue in the region. In addition, Vietnam also has a blue beret army participating in peacekeeping missions at United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions in many countries around the world.

According to journalist Khieu Kola, after 50 years of liberation and unification, Vietnam has developed rapidly, with the diligence, solidarity and patriotism of a heroic nation, and many generations of talented leaders. He loved the articles on “Things to do immediately” by the late General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh under the pen name NVL, as well as the recent articles by the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on Party building and the fight against corruption in Vietnam.

In that vein of thought, the veteran Cambodian reporter calls the current “New Era” in Vietnam the “To Lam Era” with many new, “breakthrough” decisions in the “new era” of the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Mr. Khieu Kola emphasized: “I think Vietnam is in a new era because after that statement by General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam has subways, trains, airports, and increasingly modern roads, security is getting better, and more and more goods are being produced and exported...”./.
