Doctor Pham Minh Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Center for Gender Medicine, Hanoi Infertility Hospital, said that the hospital has received a female patient who came with the desire to inject sperm into the uterus (IUI - artificial insemination) with the hope of having a child.
However, after examination, the doctor discovered that the patient had a female sexual disorder called vaginismus. This disease greatly affects sexual life and every time she has sex, her vagina contracts, directly affecting her lovemaking.

Dr. Ngoc said that vaginismus is an involuntary contraction of the pelvic muscles that prevents any movement into the vagina.
The patient told the doctor that although she and her husband had been married for 6 years, they had never had sex. Every time her husband lightly touched her private area, her muscles would stiffen, making it impossible for him to penetrate her. The patient had been treated in several places and was advised to relax, but the stiffness and pain in her vaginal area had not improved.
"After examination, the patient was treated with a combination of two methods: psychological support and sex therapy. Up to now, this young woman has been able to have sex naturally and hopes to receive "good news" in the near future," Dr. Ngoc shared.
According to Dr. Ngoc, vaginismus is a rare female sexual disorder. The main cause is psychological, but it can also be due to hormonal problems, trauma, or illness. In other cases, the patient may be traumatized by a first sexual experience that was too rough, leading to a fear of future sexual encounters.
When suffering from this syndrome, women cannot control the ability to relax the pelvic muscles, and the spasm reflex appears unintentionally. Most patients with vaginismus are afraid to go to the doctor, but silently endure, making the condition worse, affecting fertility and sex life.
Effective treatment requires a clear understanding of the patient's problem. In many cases, a combination of treatments such as psychotherapy, sex therapy, and medication is required.
