Summer is often associated with vibrant music festivals and street food, but there are festivals from countries around the world that offer unique and exotic experiences, attracting the attention of visitors from all over.
1. Festival Boryeong Mud - Korea
For two weeks every July, about 1.5 million people flock to the small town of Boryeong, located on South Korea's west coast, for the famous MudFest.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of mud-related activities, including mud bathing, mud sliding, wrestling and body painting. The festival also features street performances, food stalls and live music, creating a vibrant and colourful atmosphere.
2. Near Death Experience Festival - Spain
The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme, or near-death experience festival, takes place every July in the small village of Las Nieves in Spain.
This festival honors those who have had near-death experiences by carrying them around the village in open-backed coffins. Despite its somber theme, the festival still features fireworks and parties that last well into the night.
3. Championship swamp diving - wales
The Swamp Diving Championships are held every August at Waen Rhydd Swamp in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales.
At this event, contestants will have to dive through a 55m long ditch filled with muddy water in the shortest time possible. In addition, the festival also has a costume contest with strange and funny costumes.
4. World Wife Carrying Championship - Finland
Every July, men from all over the world flock to Sonkajärvi, Finland, to test their mettle by carrying their wives or girlfriends across a 250m obstacle course.
The winning team will be rewarded with beer, equivalent to the weight of the person being carried. In addition, there will be prizes for the funniest couple, best costume and strongest piggybacker.
5. Twin Festival - Ohio, USA
The Twins Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, USA, is the largest annual gathering of twins in the world. Held in early August, the festival includes events such as a "double take" parade and talent show.
Twins can sign up to take part in the activities and each year has a different theme. This year it's 'off two the races'. Guests are encouraged to wear racing gear from around the world.
6. Navel Festival - Japan
Hokkai Heso Matsuri, also known as the navel festival, takes place every year at the end of July in Furano, Hokkaido, Japan. This festival started in 1969, honoring the navel area of Hokkaido.
The main event of the festival is the “Heso Odori” or “belly button dance” in which participants paint colorful faces on their bellies and dance to traditional folk rhythms.
To highlight their paintings, the dancers wear large hats that cover their faces from the neck up.
7. Elvis Festival - Australia
The Elvis Festival, held in the small farming town of Parkes, New South Wales, Australia, attracts about 25,000 Elvis Presley fans each year.
The event takes place in the second week of January, coinciding with Elvis's birthday, and features a parade, live music, and dance and costume contests. The 2025 festival will mark the 32nd year of the event.
These festivals are not only an opportunity for visitors to experience unique cultures, but also an opportunity for them to immerse themselves in entertaining and different activities, creating unforgettable memories this summer.
