'A Mad Max Saga' didn't live up to expectations.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is in a close race with Sony's animated film The Garfield Movie (which grossed $24.8 million over the weekend and is estimated to have earned $31 million in four days) for the top spot. Neither film could salvage their weekend box office revenue.

It's not just North American audiences who are showing little interest in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga . The fifth installment in director George Miller's Mad Max series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is languishing at the international box office, earning $33.3 million from 75 countries and territories, bringing its total global revenue to $58.9 million. This is a difficult start considering the film cost $168 million to produce, not including the massive global press tour that included a stop at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

David A. Gross of film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research said: "This is a weak opening despite excellent reviews from critics and positive audience reception."

Part of the problem is that prequels rarely do as well as sequels, especially when they lack the stars from the original. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, released last November, grossed $337 million against a $100 million budget, but still couldn't match the original Hunger Games story without Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. However, Lionsgate spent less on The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes than on previous installments, so the prequel was financially successful. In the case of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga , Warner Bros. apparently didn't consider this and cut spending.

Mad Max: Fury Road , released in 2015 and starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, was lauded as one of the best action films ever made, but it wasn't exactly a box office hit. It opened with $45 million and grossed a modest $380 million against its large $180 million budget, failing to even rank among the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2015.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Vietnamese title : Fusiosa: The Story of Mad Max ), currently showing in Vietnam, has grossed 7.2 billion VND (according to Box Office Vietnam).
