Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is in a tight race with Sony's animated The Garfield Movie (which earned $24.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million over four days) for first place. Neither could salvage the holiday weekend.

It's not just North American audiences who are showing up less to see Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga . George Miller's fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is stalling at the international box office, with $33.3 million from 75 countries and territories, for a global total of $58.9 million. It's a tough start, considering the film cost $168 million to produce, not including a massive global press tour that includes a stop at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
"It's a weak opening despite stellar critical reviews and good audience reception," said David A. Gross of film consultancy Franchise Entertainment Research.
Part of the problem is that prequels rarely do as well as sequels, especially without the stars from the original. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which hit theaters last November and grossed $337 million on a $100 million budget, also failed to live up to the original Hunger Games story without Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. However, Lionsgate spent less on The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes than it did on its predecessors, so the prequel was a financial success. In the case of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga , Warner Bros. apparently didn't take that into account and cut back.

Mad Max: Fury Road , which hit theaters in 2015, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, was hailed as one of the best action movies ever made, but it wasn’t exactly a box office hit. It opened with $45 million and grossed a modest $380 million against a massive $180 million budget, and didn’t even make it into the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2015.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Vietnamese title : Fusiosa: Story from Mad Max ) is currently showing in Vietnam and has grossed 7.2 billion VND (according to Box Office Vietnam).
